Biden declares his climate agenda to be the most aggressive in history while designating California monuments.
On Sunday, the president's last day in office, President-elect Trump will take office on Monday.
On Tuesday, President Biden signed proclamations to create the Chuckwalla National Monument and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, safeguarding over 100,000 acres of land in California.
Due to wildfires in Southern California, the event was postponed by a week. Biden had originally planned to hold the ceremony in California, but it was ultimately moved to the White House.
"The president stated in the East Room of the White House that the climate agenda being pursued is the most aggressive ever in history, prior to discussing national monuments. He emphasized that natural wonders are the essence of the country."
In his second week as president, he signed an executive order to establish the first ever conservation goal, aiming to protect 30% of all lands and waters in America by 2030. This national campaign, dubbed "America the Beautiful," has seen significant progress over the past four years, with the restoration and creation of new national monuments, as well as the conservation of hundreds of millions of acres of land and waters across the country.
In the past four years, I have been committed to protecting more land and water than any American president.
Over 600,000 acres of public land in the California desert near Joshua Tree National Park and the Colorado River will be protected by the Chuckwalla National Monument, as stated by the National Parks Conservation Association.
The Sáttítla Highlands National Monument will safeguard over 224,000 acres of land in Northern California, encompassing parts of the Modoc, Shasta-Trinity, and Klamath national forests. This monument aims to protect ancestral homelands of local tribes, preserve historic and scientific wonders, conserve rare flora and fauna, and safeguard the sources of vital water.
