Biden criticizes Trump while praising Carter's integrity, recalls favorite moment with the deceased leader.
Biden refers to Carter as a longtime companion of over 50 years.
On Sunday, President Biden paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter while also criticizing the current president-elect during his address to the nation.
Biden, who sounded hoarse during the speech, said he "lost a dear friend" on Sunday, noting that he had known Carter for more than 50 years. Carter passed away in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100, after nearly two years of being in hospice care.
In his speech, Biden praised Carter as an exemplar of a life characterized by meaning, purpose, principles, faith, and humility.
""Jimmy Carter embodies honesty and character, and while faith and humility were important then, they still matter today. We should all strive to be more like him," Biden stated."
In the 1970s, Carter, who was then the governor of Georgia, sought Biden's assistance with his presidential campaign, which remains Biden's most cherished memory of Carter.
"Biden remembered how he was grabbed by the arm by the governor and said, "I need your help with my campaign," to which Biden replied, "I've only been around for a couple of years, Mr. Governor." The governor responded, "No, it will make a difference.""
"When I endorsed him for president, I explained my reasons for doing so, emphasizing not just his policies but also his character, decency, and the respect he conveyed to others."
Biden advised Trump to inherit Carter's legacy of decency.
"Can you imagine Jimmy Carter being indifferent to someone's needs and referring to them based on their appearance or speech?"
After Trump issued his statement about Carter's death, Biden gave a speech.
"As former Presidents, we understand the exclusive nature of our role and the immense responsibility that comes with leading the greatest nation in history. We can relate to the challenges faced by Jimmy Carter during his presidency, which occurred at a crucial time for our country. Despite these challenges, Carter worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all Americans. For this, we owe him a debt of gratitude."
Trump acknowledged that Carter deeply loved and respected the US despite their philosophical and political differences.
"He worked tirelessly to improve America and deserves my utmost admiration. He was an exceptional individual who will be deeply missed, and his impact will be felt for years to come."
