Biden criticizes Slotkin for 'garbage' remark during intense Senate debate.
In the Michigan Senate race, Mike Rogers, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Slotkin.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democratic candidate for Michigan Senate, criticized President Biden's comment that supporters of former President Trump are "garbage," stating it was an "inappropriate" remark.
"Slotkin stated on local radio Wednesday morning that the statement made by him was inappropriate and should not have been said. In her opinion, such kind of talk is not beneficial for politics."
During a virtual campaign call, Biden was questioned about comedian Tony Hinchiffe, who made offensive jokes at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally, including one that referred to Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage."
"His supporters are the only garbage floating out there," Biden said in response. "Trump's demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American."
The remarks were swiftly compared to Hillary Clinton's infamous "basket of deplorables" comment during her 2016 presidential campaign against Trump.
The White House quickly tried to clarify Biden's remarks, stating that he had referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as "garbage."
Bates stated that the president was making a reference to a joke by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, in which he compared Puerto Rico to an island of floating "garbage" in the middle of the ocean.
Slotkin, who is running against former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in a close Senate race, contended that Republicans and Democrats should engage in civil discourse without resorting to the "unnecessary" language employed by Biden.
"I believe 80% of Michiganders simply want their government to function effectively, with Democrats and Republicans engaging in civil and reasonable debates rather than resorting to name-calling," Slotkin stated. "While I found the name-calling unnecessary, this is why I am eager for the election to come to an end."
The White House declined to comment on a Planet Chronicle Digital request.
