Biden bids adieu in a letter, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country.
Tonight, Biden will give his farewell address from the Oval Office.
Over 50 years, it has been an honor to serve this nation as President.
The president announced that our economy is the strongest in the world, with 16.6 million new jobs created and wages on the rise. He also stated that inflation is continuing to decrease before delivering a speech from the Oval Office tonight.
Biden commenced his letter by stating that at the time of his inauguration four years ago, the country was facing the worst pandemic in a century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and the worst assault on democracy since the Civil War.
He stated, "Although we faced challenges, we united as Americans and persevered. As a result, we are now stronger, more prosperous, and more secure."
Biden stated that our nation is being rebuilt, including urban, suburban, rural, and Tribal communities, while emphasizing economic growth.
"America is regaining its position as a global leader in manufacturing, science, and innovation, particularly in the semiconductor industry. We have also managed to lower the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, a feat that Big Pharma could not achieve. To top it all off, more Americans have health insurance coverage than ever before."
Biden stated that he ran for president as he believed the soul of America was at risk.
The essence of our identity was in jeopardy, he stated, and this remains true today. America is a concept more powerful than any military force and encompassing than any body of water.
President-elect Donald Trump will soon return to the White House for a second term as Biden prepares to depart.
I have been honored to serve this country for more than 50 years. As a child with a stutter from humble beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, I never imagined that one day I would sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States. I have poured my heart and soul into this nation, and in return, I have been blessed with the love and support of the American people.
Biden concluded his letter by stating that the future of history, power, and "the idea of America" lies in the hands of its citizens.
"We must maintain our faith and recall our identity as the United States of America. As a nation, we possess an unlimited potential when we unite," he stated.
