Biden announces ambitious climate goal to cut emissions by 66% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels.
US climate policies have been reversed by Trump and Biden.
With only weeks remaining in his presidency, Biden declared an ambitious objective for the US to cut its carbon emissions by two-thirds.
The White House has declared a new objective, which aims to significantly decrease the U.S.'s carbon emissions by 2035, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
The White House announced that President Biden has set a new climate target for the United States: a 61-66 percent reduction in 2035 from 2005 levels in economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions.
The United States is committed to maintaining a direct course towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the economy by 2050. In conjunction with this declaration, the US is submitting a formal proposal to the UN Climate Change secretariat as its updated NDC under the Paris Agreement.
After entering office, President-elect Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement. Biden later re-entered the U.S. into the treaty. Trump has not stated whether he intends to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement again, which aims to have global powers implement climate reforms.
The Biden administration's energy and climate regulations may be scaled back under Trump's reported plan to appoint an "energy czar."
A group of six sources close to Trump's transition team revealed to the New York Times last month that a set of executive orders and presidential proclamations have been prepared on climate and energy, with the aim of reversing Biden-era clean energy regulations that some argue have harmed the economy.
Trump and his transition team are reportedly considering installing an "energy czar" to streamline regulations on domestic energy production and possibly relocating the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters outside of Washington, D.C.
"President Trump was re-elected by a significant margin, giving him the authority to fulfill the campaign promises he made, according to Karoline Leavitt, Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman, who confirmed the details to Planet Chronicle Digital. "He will deliver," she stated."
