As Republicans attempt to save the spending package and prevent a government shutdown, what can be anticipated?
A government shutdown may still occur despite House Republicans collaborating with President-elect Trump on a package.
The arrival of conservatives, President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and Elon Musk has put House Speaker Mike Johnson and others in a difficult position, as they try to find a way out of their political deadlock and prevent a government shutdown at 12:00:01 a.m. ET Saturday.
The unexpected demand from Trump to address the debt ceiling in the package has made the situation more complicated, as many conservatives refuse to vote for any increase in the debt ceiling. Meanwhile, Democrats are hesitant to approve the deal because Republicans have broken their promise.
Republicans have been aided by Democrats in passing every significant fiscal bill this Congress. It seems that Democrats are finished assisting Republicans.
If a new bill is introduced, conservatives may require it to be left untouched for three days before voting, which could lead to a shutdown if there isn't enough time to avoid it.
That does not even address getting it through the Senate.
On Wednesday night, many Planet Chronicle interviewees resigned themselves to a high chance of a government shutdown, possibly extending through Christmas, as there is no combination of votes that has yet been found to solve this puzzle.
The fate of disaster aid for North Carolina and Florida after Hurricanes Helene and Milton is now in serious limbo, as some conservatives are opposed to providing assistance without offsets. Congress has not yet addressed this issue.
