As illegal immigration becomes a major concern in the US elections, the Mexican government is transporting migrants to the US border.
Controversial app allows up to 1,450 migrants entry through ports
The Biden administration has implemented a controversial phone app that allows migrants to be paroled into the U.S., and the Mexican government is now busing migrants to the border if they have appointments using this app.
The Mexican government launched an "Emerging Safe Mobility Corridor" last month, and the Mexican National Institute of Migration posted a video of the first bus transporting "foreigners" from Tapachula to Reynosa. The migrants will attend their appointments scheduled via the CBP One app.
During the Biden administration, the CBP One app was enhanced to enable up to 1,450 migrants to schedule an appointment at a U.S. port of entry for parole into the country, provided they meet specific criteria. Additionally, the app allows them to submit documents prior to the appointment.
The Biden administration has stated that the app is a crucial element of its migration strategy, which entails enhancing funding at the border and expanding "legal" migration avenues. Additionally, the app has been utilized to permit up to 30,000 nationals from four countries to fly directly into the U.S. after being approved.
The administration has been accused by Republicans of abusing humanitarian parole, which is intended for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit. They claim that the administration is allowing migrants to enter quasi-legally, and have cited statistics showing that over 95% of migrants who schedule an appointment are granted entry.
Last month, the Mexican government declared a plan to transport foreigners to the U.S. border as part of a "safe mobility corridor." This includes issuing a temporary 20-day visa for those with a confirmed CBP One appointment, as well as providing transportation and food.
A DHS Inspector General report has criticized the app for problems with vetting, among other issues.
The report stated that while CBP utilizes biographic and biometric data submitted to CBP One to assess whether noncitizens have derogatory records, it does not employ this information to identify suspicious patterns during its pre-arrival screening processes.
The crisis at the southern border has led to immigration becoming a major election issue. The Biden administration is pushing for a bipartisan Senate bill to increase border funding, which it claims is necessary to address the crisis. The administration has also accused Congress of failing to provide adequate funding for the border.
Since President Biden signed an order to temporarily suspend the entry of illegal immigrants across the border, DHS has reported a 50% decrease in apprehensions. Additionally, the agency has removed over 131,000 individuals to 144 countries, including 420 international deportation flights. Furthermore, DHS has tripled the percentage of non-citizens processed through Expedited Removal to Mexico while in custody.
The crisis has been attributed to the administration's policies by Republicans, including former President Trump, who has pledged to abolish parole and initiate a large-scale deportation drive if he wins the election in November.
