As Election Day approaches, pro-Harris merchandise is being outpaced by Trump merchandise by a significant margin.
Supporters showed a 'strong demand' for pro-Trump sales.
This election season, a survey analyzed the amount of Trump and Harris merchandise purchased on Amazon, revealing a significant disparity.
Cint, a technology research firm, recently published a report by Omnisend, a marketing automation platform, titled "Multimillion-dollar election merch industry: What will happen to it after elections?" The research was conducted in August 2024.
Jungle Scout software was used by researchers to analyze merchandise sales trends from April to September 2024, with a survey of 1,000 participants across America having a margin of error of +/-3%.
In contrast to pro-Harris merchandise, pro-Trump merchandise generated more than five times as much revenue. Specifically, Amazon sellers made $140 million selling Trump merchandise from April to September, while Harris merchandise sellers made only $26 million.
In July, the month when the former president was shot at a Pennsylvania rally, $41.6 million was spent on Trump merchandise, according to a study.
Despite not announcing her presidential campaign until July, the difference in sales between Harris and Biden in August and September was significant.
In August, merchants made $27.86 million selling Trump gear and $11.52 million selling pro-Harris products. The difference grew in September, with Trump merchandise sales reaching $31.89 million and Harris merchandise sales totaling $10.43 million.
The loyal base of Trump's supporters is driving the high demand for pro-Trump merchandise, according to Omnisend's merchandise analysis.
The company observed that Trump's merchandise, including flags and MAGA hats, continues to dominate the market, while Harris' sales were also noteworthy.
"The study revealed that Harris' growing popularity and engagement have led to an increase in merch sales, indicating a rise in support for her campaign. This highlights the significant role of the political merch industry and the intense competition among candidates to capture voter enthusiasm through merchandise sales."
Millions were sold for items such as birthday cards, mugs, yard signs, and stickers, but Trump flags, hats, and shirts remained the most profitable.
"Trump merchandise, specifically flags and MAGA hats, have been the most popular items among supporters, accounting for 30% of total sales and generating $40M in revenue, according to Omnisend."
"The study noted that Walker's earmuffs featuring Trump's campaign logo have been a top-selling item, generating an estimated $3M for a single seller since being listed in the summer. Additionally, many stores selling Trump merchandise offer customizable items such as t-shirts, cups, and hats."
A study revealed that 58% of Americans plan to buy or have already bought election merchandise, indicating a growing trend of using merchandise to show political support.
"According to Greg Zakowicz, senior e-commerce expert at Omnisend, brands can connect with customers by focusing on universal values and themes related to civic engagement, such as voting or community involvement. This approach ensures broad appeal without polarizing your audience."
