World leaders are expressing their condolences as the U.S. mourns the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his condolences to the people and government of the United States, particularly to the family and loved ones of President James Carter, in a message on X. He wrote, "Our people will remember with gratitude his efforts to improve relations, his visits to Cuba, and his statement in favor of the freedom of the (Cuban) Five."
Carter accomplished several significant achievements during his one term in the White House, including the Camp David Accords, the second SALT treaty, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the deregulation of the airline industry.
In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in resolving international conflicts through peaceful means, earning praise from world leaders for his promotion of economic, social, and human rights development.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his heartfelt condolences to the American people and the family of former US President Jimmy Carter on his passing. Carter was a leader who served during a time when Ukraine was not yet independent, yet his heart stood firmly with us in our ongoing fight for freedom. Zelenskyy deeply appreciated Carter's steadfast commitment to Christian faith and democratic values, as well as his unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked aggression. Carter devoted his life to promoting peace in the world and defending human rights. Today, Zelenskyy remembered Carter's legacy and urged the world to remain united in standing against those who threaten peace and human rights. He said, "May his memory be eternal."
King Charles expressed his sorrow on social media, joining the Royal Family in mourning the loss.
"I was saddened to hear of the death of former President Carter. He was a dedicated public servant who devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights. His commitment and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I fondly remember his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977. My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter's family and the American people during this difficult time."
Olaf Scholz, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, expressed his condolences on X by writing, "We share in the grief of our American friends as they mourn the passing of their former President Jimmy Carter. The US has lost a dedicated advocate for democracy. The world has lost a skilled mediator for peace in the Middle East and for human rights."
Carter died at his home in Georgia surrounded by his family.
"Chip Carter, the former president's son, stated that his father was a hero not only to him but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. He shared that his siblings and he had the privilege of experiencing their father's impact on the world through their common beliefs. The world is their family because of the way their father brought people together, and they thanked everyone for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs."
