Currently, Rep. Jamie Raskin is the top-ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive Democrat from New York, has announced her bid for the top Democratic position on the House committee responsible for investigating the federal government.
On Friday, AOC declared her intention to run for the position of Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability for the 119th Congress, which is currently held by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md.
In her pitch to colleagues, the "Squad" member stated that her main focus would be to lead a Democratic opposition against the incoming administration under President-elect Donald Trump.
"The congresswoman wrote in a letter that she does not take lightly the responsibility of leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during Donald Trump's second term in the White House. She emphasized the importance of the Committee's role in holding administrations accountable and addressing the economic precarity and inequality that threatens the American way of life."
The Oversight Committee Democrats in the 119th Congress will have a crucial responsibility to address the incoming president's harmful actions and corruption while also advocating for the working class.
Raskin, the committee's current ranking member, announced his bid for the top Democratic post just days before AOC made her own announcement.
Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., has announced his bid for the Oversight role, and AOC will also be running for the seat.
As chairman of the committee, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., is responsible for overseeing the efficiency and accountability of the federal government and its agencies.
