Another policy position flipped by Harris: Banning plastic straws

During the 2020 primary season, Harris advocated for a government ban on single-use plastics, including plastic straws.

Vice President Kamala Harris has reversed her stance on banning plastic straws.

Harris' campaign has shifted from her previous stance in the 2020 Democratic primary, where she strongly supported banning plastic straws for environmental reasons.

A campaign official told Axios on Wednesday that she doesn't back the idea of banning plastic straws.

During a CNN town hall marathon in 2019, Harris was questioned about her stance on a ban on "single use plastics," particularly regarding plastic straws.

"I think we should, yes," Harris responded.

"I'm going to be honest, it's difficult to drink out of a paper straw," she joked. "We need to perfect it a bit more."

The policy change does not diminish the importance of environmental reforms for the vice president, as emphasized in the campaign.

The campaign informed Axios that the president will continue to build on the progress made by casting the tie-breaking vote on the most significant legislation to combat climate change and create clean energy jobs in history.

The Harris campaign has recently undergone a series of position flips as the vice president aims to succeed President Biden in the upcoming November election.

Since becoming the Democratic Party's nominee after President Biden dropped out of the race last month, Harris has been criticized by voters, political commentators, and the Trump campaign for changing her stance on crucial policies.

Last month, Harris' campaign revealed that the vice president does not back a ban on fracking, which is widely popular in key swing states such as Pennsylvania.

Despite her remarks as a primary candidate in a 2019 CNN town hall event, where Harris stated that there is "no question I’m in favor of banning fracking," that position is the opposite of her current stance.

During her failed primary campaign in the 2020 cycle, Harris publicly supported "Medicare for All" and semiautomatic rifle buyback programs. However, she has since distanced herself from these programs.
