On Wednesday, a former FBI informant who allegedly made up a false tale about President Biden and his son Hunter Biden receiving $10 million in bribes from the Ukrainian gas company Burisma was given six years in federal prison.

Since his arrest in February, Alexander Smirnov, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been in prison on charges of lying to the FBI.

President Biden granted a pardon to his son Hunter before he was sentenced on tax and gun-related charges, which were brought by special counsel David Weiss in connection with his investigation into Hunter.

In November, the Justice Department added more tax charges against Smirnov, accusing him of hiding millions of dollars of income earned between 2020 and 2022. Smirnov pleaded guilty in December to avoid his impending trial.

Smirnov was accused of falsely stating that executives from Burisma paid then-Vice President Biden and his son $5 million each in 2015. However, Smirnov's claim in 2020 was made after he expressed bias against Joe Biden as a presidential candidate. The indictment revealed that Smirnov had only routine business dealings with Burisma starting in 2017, after Biden's term as vice president.

The resurfacing of Smirnov's claim during the House impeachment inquiry into President Biden caused a commotion in Congress, but the Biden administration dismissed it as a "stunt."

After Smirnov's arrest, the FBI released the unredacted form documenting the unverified allegations, despite Republicans' earlier demand for it and their acknowledgement that they couldn't confirm their truth.

"Weiss' team stated in court documents that the defendant betrayed the United States, a country that had shown him kindness, including granting him citizenship, by attempting to interfere in a Presidential election."

The Justice Department accused Smirnov of being a "liar and a tax cheat" who "betrayed the United States" and "made bogus corruption claims against the Biden family." Prosecutors agreed to pursue no more than six years against him as part of his plea deal.

Both Hunter Biden and President-elect Trump, who faced charges in two federal cases by Special Counsel Jack Smith, have been cleared of any significant punishment.

In Los Angeles federal court, Smirnov was sentenced to four years in prison by his lawyers, who argued that their client had learned a grave lesson, had no criminal record, and was suffering from severe glaucoma in both eyes. The sentencing concluded the final aspects of Weiss's investigation, and the special counsel is expected to submit a report to Attorney General Garland in accordance with federal regulations. Garland has the option to release the report to the public.

Since February, Smirnov will receive credit for the time he spent in prison.
