Americans commemorate Carter's lasting impact beyond National Cathedral funeral.
A national ceremony honoring the late former President Carter took place at the National Cathedral on Thursday.
Viewers outside Jimmy Carter's funeral at the National Cathedral remember him for his compassion, religion, and philanthropy, as reported by Planet Chronicle Digital.
Since his passing on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, several memorials have been held for the 39th president, both in D.C. and Georgia. Carter was the only American president to have reached the century mark.
A memorial service was held for Carter at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, and Fox New Digital spoke to people gathered outside the funeral about the late president's lasting legacy.
A woman who met Carter at the age of 7 recalled the experience and said it ignited her passion for politics.
"My mom was a delegate to the '76 convention representing Arkansas. I met him when he came to Arkansas to campaign, and I remember him being very sweet," she told Planet Chronicle Digital.
She said, "I believe that was the start of my passion for politics and I know he's an exceptional individual. As a result, we decided to stroll down and pay our respects."
The woman's husband also reflected on Carter's legacy.
"The individual stated to Fox that what they found fascinating about President Carter was his brief political career, lasting only 8 to 10 years. However, his lifelong legacy was the humanitarian efforts he undertook to help others. He made no one a stranger, and the individual expressed a desire to live a life that reflected Carter's selflessness and support for others."
On Thursday, President Biden declared a National Day of Mourning, resulting in many Americans having the day off from work. Several individuals spent the morning outside the memorial to pay their respects.
"The viewer who spoke to Fox said that they grew up during the time when the president was in office, and they were just a child. However, they also followed the president's work with the homeless and house building over the years. Additionally, the viewer had some friends in Wisconsin who were part of the president's church. On their day off, they decided to take a walk down to see if they could see anything."
A young resident of D.C. informed Fox that although he did not encounter Carter as president, he kept track of his activities after he left office.
"I believe he was undoubtedly president prior to my birth. However, I am aware that his post-presidency work has been widely recognized and significant, particularly in relation to Habitat for Humanity and other initiatives. As a result, I believe he will be remembered for these accomplishments."
After the D.C. memorial, Carter will be returned to his home state of Georgia for burial alongside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.
All living presidents, including President-elect Biden, Trump, Obama, and Clinton, attended a funeral service in D.C. on Thursday, marking the first time they have gathered together since the funeral of former President H.W. Bush in 2018.
