After Rubio's expected resignation, DeSantis reveals his pick for Senate appointment.
Trump's Secretary of State is expected to be confirmed, leaving Florida without a senator.
On Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., announced his plans to appoint a senator to replace Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who is expected to be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump's Secretary of State after his inauguration.
The governor selected Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to be the next senator.
DeSantis has relied on Moody as a crucial ally in the state, collaborating closely with him to advance his goals as governor.
Moody stated that he is currently occupied as attorney general and is highly focused on his job, which involves protecting the autonomy of the state and pushing back against Washington's interference. Despite this, he expressed his love for leadership roles and working with President Trump and Governor DeSantis. He hopes to continue serving Floridians in the future.
Trump and Senators Katie Britt and Rick Scott initially endorsed Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the former president, to succeed Marco Rubio. However, she later withdrew her candidacy.
"After careful consideration and support from numerous individuals, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate," she stated on X.
