After losing the majority in the Senate, Democrats appoint new leadership.

On Tuesday morning, the Senate Democrats conducted a private election to determine their new leadership positions for the upcoming two years, including the replacement for the retiring longtime lawmaker in the No. 3 spot.

Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was unanimously re-elected as the Democratic leader and chair of the conference in the Senate next year, maintaining his position as the top Democrat in the chamber among his colleagues.

"Schumer expressed gratitude and humility for being selected by his colleagues to lead Senate Democrats during a pivotal time for the country. He acknowledged the significant work that lies ahead for both the Senate and the nation, and pledged that his caucus would continue to advocate for the interests of America's working class in the upcoming Congress."

The No. 3 spot in the Senate will have new representation next cycle, while Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., will retain his position as Democratic minority whip.

After not seeking re-election this cycle, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., relinquished her position as chair of the policy and communications committee.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., was chosen by democratic senators to hold the No. 3 position after being appointed to lead the steering and policy committee.

Cory Booker, D-N.J., will assume a leadership role in the next Congress as he is elevated to chair the strategic communications committee, the fourth-highest ranking position in the Senate minority.
