After historic election victory, Dems pave way for Donald J. Trump Avenue in Miami-Dade County.
In 2024, Trump won Miami-Dade by more than 13%, marking the first time a Republican has won the county since 1988.
It's a sign of the times.
Miami-Dade County, Florida, which was once a Democratic stronghold, will pay tribute to President-elect Donald Trump by including his name on a street after he won the county by a significant margin in the 2024 election.
Miami-Dade County has officially named President Donald J. Trump Avenue, as announced by District 6 Commissioner Kevin M. Cabrera in a post on X.
On Tuesday, the Board of County Commissioners for Hialeah approved the street name with a vote of 9 to 1.
"We approved the City of Hialeah's initiative to recognize President Trump's legacy of promoting freedom and opportunity by renaming Palm Avenue, a significant road in our community, as 'President Donald J. Trump Avenue.'"
The Miami Herald reports that Democrats on the County Commission could have prevented Tuesday's approval because they hold seven of the 13 nonpartisan board seats.
One member of the commission opposed the move because they couldn't agree with some of the former president's derogatory comments about immigrants.
"Although President Trump won the popular vote, Electoral College, and Miami-Dade County, the collective trauma experienced by immigrants and citizens during the election cycle cannot be erased, said Democratic commission member Marleine Bastien in a statement reported by the Miami Herald."
Five Republicans and four Democrats voted for the renaming of the street, as per the commission clerk.
Cabrera stated that Miami-Dade County's support for President Trump during the election is reflected in this designation as an enduring recognition of his leadership and vision for our country.
According to the local outlet, the city is permitted to display "President Donald J. Trump Avenue" signs on county infrastructure, including under Miami-Dade traffic lights along the city-maintained roadway with the county's approval.
Last year, the city council approved a proposal to rename a road for Trump after Hialeah Mayor Esteban "Steve" Bovo announced the move and presented Trump with a street sign at a campaign rally.
In a previous interview, Bovo stated that the Cuban American community feels a sense of gratitude towards Donald Trump, as our city LOVES him.
In November, Trump won Hialeah by 53 points, which is equivalent to 75% of the vote in the city. Additionally, he won Miami-Dade by more than 13%, marking the first time a Republican has won the county since 1988.
Bovo honored President Trump's dedication to putting America first and serving the interests of the American people through the renaming. The statement was a tribute to Trump's vision and commitment to upholding values that resonate deeply with the community.
No response was immediately received from the Democratic members of the commission when Planet Chronicle Digital contacted them.
