After being convicted of bribery, prosecutors are seeking a 15-year sentence for disgraced former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez.

Prosecutors argue that disgraced former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez should be sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in a "serious bribery and foreign influence scheme." On Friday, they filed a 108-page briefing detailing their arguments for sentencing Menendez, as well as Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, who were also convicted.

The prosecutors highlighted the gravity and profoundness of the offenses and underscored their historical importance in their presentation.

Prosecutors stated that, as evidenced by the trial, the defendants engaged in a corruption and foreign influence scheme of remarkable audacity, scope, and duration, leading to significant misuse of power at the highest levels of the United States Government's Legislative Branch.

The prosecutors contend that Menendez's "egregious" crimes were driven by "naked greed" and a "sense of entitlement to exploit the public's trust for personal gain."

The former Democrat, Menendez, was charged and found guilty of being involved in a long-term bribery scheme with the governments of Egypt and Qatar. His wife, Nadine, is scheduled to be tried on January 21 and is accused of receiving payments for a non-existent job.

Prosecutors pointed out in the brief that Menendez, who pledged to uphold the United States and New Jersey, sold his office for bribes instead.

In July 2024, Menendez, who was charged in 2023, made history by becoming the first US senator to be convicted of acting as a foreign agent. His conviction came after a nine-week-long trial. The former Democratic lawmaker was accused of accepting gifts totaling more than $100,000 in gold bars as well as cash.

His sentencing is currently slated to take place on Jan. 29, 2025.
