According to NASA administrator, there could be at least a trillion other planets like Earth in the universe.
Nelson discusses lunar and Martian missions and the quest for extraterrestrial existence.
In the near future, NASA intends to send astronauts back to the moon. Next year, a crew of four will circle the lunar surface.
"We're going back to the moon to learn new things, not just for the moon. This is necessary for us to go to Mars and beyond," said Administrator Bill Nelson.
On Mars, the Perseverance Rover is currently investigating the Jezero Crater, a former lake, in search of evidence of past life.
"Nelson explained that they were drilling with a drill to obtain core samples about the size of a cigar, which were then sealed in titanium tubes. The aim was to determine how to retrieve these samples and bring them back to Earth to assess whether there was life on the planet."
NASA is collaborating with multiple corporations to devise a strategy for the future Mars return mission, which may take place in the 2030s. Additionally, the agency is collaborating with Firebird Diagnostics in the search for life on the red planet.
According to Firebird Diagnostics Founder Steven Benner, NASA's mission includes exploring whether or not we are the only species in the universe.
NASA has utilized his company's synthetic alien DNA to comprehend potential alternative DNA forms.
Benner posed a significant question: "If an organism that does not share a common ancestor or origin with us were to practice molecular biology, how would it be done?"
The DNA has also helped detect diseases like Covid-19, cancer, and HIV on Earth. Human DNA has four nucleotides, while Benner's synthetic material has up to eight. These additional nucleotides enable more sensitive testing and eliminate false positives.
Benner stated that it enables you to locate the needle in the haystack without being concerned about the surrounding information.
Understanding our place in the universe is improved by searching for life on other planets, according to Nelson.
"According to Nelson, if asked directly, he does not believe there are aliens on Earth. However, he acknowledges that he cannot be absolutely certain. Additionally, he stated that he does not think the U.S. government is hiding anything. When asked about the possibility of life beyond Earth, Nelson queried NASA scientists about the number of possibilities in the universe for a planet like Earth that could support life. They responded that there are at least a trillion possibilities."
While the probability of life existing in space is high, it is likely so far away that it may not be discovered for a long time. Nevertheless, NASA is preparing for the possibility.
"Despite being able to travel at the speed of light to a distant world, the closest ones are still a thousand light years away," Nelson remarked. "However, this does not prevent us from comprehending what lies beyond."
NASA scientists have been requested by Nelson to incorporate artificial intelligence into the software of spacecrafts.
"NASA's spacecrafts, like Voyager, can communicate with other spacecraft in real-time, even if they are beyond our solar system, as Nelson explained. This is what makes NASA a group of wizards, making the impossible possible."
