New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a Republican, left office with high approval ratings after eight years of leading the swing state.

Sununu, who won re-election four times in New Hampshire and neighboring Vermont, where governors serve two-year terms, gave credit to his team.

According to Sununu, being a successful executive requires being surrounded by exceptional individuals, as he stated in a Planet Chronicle interview on his final day in office on Wednesday.

Sununu stated that he aimed to improve his tenure in office by leaving it better than he found it, and he was proud of the progress made in the last eight years.

Sununu stated that the key to success in his job is always finding a way to make it work for the citizens. He emphasized that being results-driven is essential, regardless of the challenges he may face, such as politics, the surrounding atmosphere, or the hand he is dealt.

He boasted that New Hampshire has performed exceptionally well.

Kelly Ayotte, his successor as governor, a fellow Republican and former senator, concurred.

Ayotte, who campaigned on continuing the Sununu agenda, praised her predecessor.

Governor Chris Sununu deserves the most credit for New Hampshire's progress after four terms in office, according to Ayotte. "Thank you, Governor," she said.

Ray Buckely, the longtime New Hampshire Democratic Party chair and a vocal critic of Governor Sununu, disagreed with him, citing "years of failed Republican policies" under the retiring governor.

Sununu, who previously stated that he wouldn't seek a fifth term as governor, recently reaffirmed his desire to return to the private sector, possibly in private equity or board positions.

For months, Sununu, the 50-year-old governor of New Hampshire, has consistently stated that he has no intention of running for the Senate in 2026.

He emphasized that he is not planning on running for anything in the next two, four, or six years.

Although Sununu considered running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 in 2023, he did not completely rule out the possibility of another run for office in the future.

"Nothing I'm planning on or my family would tolerate in the short term will happen down the road," he said.

Sununu, a frequent guest on cable news and Sunday talk shows, is contemplating a more formal media role.

He revealed that he is currently communicating with several networks that have approached him with various tasks, and he plans to continue assisting them. He is open to exploring the possibility of a more long-term commitment with a network or show.

Sununu, a member of a well-known political family (his father John H. Sununu served as governor and chief of staff to President George H.W. Bush, and his older brother John E. Sununu was a congressman and senator), stated that he plans to remain politically active, even if he does not run for office.

Whether President-elect Trump still wants Sununu's help at the party is uncertain.

Sununu, a vocal critic of Trump after his failed attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss, later endorsed Trump rival Nikki Haley in the 2024 GOP presidential race. Sununu became a top surrogate for Haley, a former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador in Trump's first administration.

After Trump won the Republican presidential nomination, Sununu stated that he would support him.

"Sununu praised Trump's leadership as the head of the Republican Party and the voice of the party. He also commended Trump's nominations of candidates and the progress of the DOGE department."

And he praised the politician he had long criticized.

"The president deserves recognition. He earned it. He won the primaries and received the votes," Sununu stated. "He put in the effort to achieve success, not only in the primary but also attracted a new group of voters for the Republican Party during the general election. Therefore, he did an exceptional job."

He stated that the Republican Party is larger than any individual, including Trump.

"The Republican Party is a diverse group with a wide range of views, including fiscal conservatives, social moderates, and even some extremists, and everyone has a place and a voice within it."

And Sununu's very optimistic about the GOP's future.

"The Republican Party is growing, and Nov. 5 was a significant example of this growth. I am optimistic about the party's future with Donald Trump and other leaders, as JD Vance and others are contributing their ideas and ensuring that the party's focus remains on America."
