A Kamala Harris pollster advises Democrats to develop a new strategy to tackle Trump.
If Democrats concentrate solely on Trump and neglect Vance, it would be a significant mistake, according to DNC chair Harrison.
To confront President-elect Trump, the Democratic party needs a new game plan, according to a leading pollster and strategist.
Molly Murphy, a top pollster on Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign, emphasized during a presentation at the first meeting of the Democratic National Committee's executive committee since last month's election that the 2025 playbook cannot be the 2017 playbook.
Trump's convincing victory in the presidential election, with him winning the popular vote and capturing all seven key battleground states, as well as the GOP's successful flipping of the Senate and holding onto their slim majority in the House, has left Democrats struggling to find answers as they attempt to exit the political wilderness.
According to Murphy, post-election polls indicate that most Americans approve of the president-elect's handling of his transition, and that Trump will enter the White House next month with higher popularity than he had during his first presidential campaign.
She observed that voters overlook his controversial remarks because they admire his economic management.
On Friday, as DNC leaders met at a hotel near the U.S. Capitol, Murphy stated that the Democrats' objective moving forward is to alter that viewpoint.
Murphy stated that our focus should be on this term and that we will narrate how it is detrimental to the American people, implying a negative outcome.
"As a north star, I believe we should concentrate on the economy and expenses," Murphy stated.
Murphy remarked that many individuals anticipate the cost of milk to return to its previous level.
Democrats should take a cue from the GOP's 2024 campaign strategy and argue that even if the economy is stronger, costs will still be too high for people.
She emphasized that Democrats should highlight the unpopular aspects of the Trump agenda, such as "tax cuts for the wealthy" and "allowing corporations to increase prices and pass them on to consumers."
She stated that Trump's proposed tariffs on key American trading partners should be viewed as a "sales tax on the American people" that would increase prices, a sentiment she expressed during her campaign.
Trump and Republicans gained support among key segments of the Democratic Party's base, including younger voters, Latinos, and Black voters, due to the economy and the Democrats' "wonky" messaging, as pointed out by Murphy.
"Polices are often the subject of our discussions," Murphy stated, while Republicans engage in "culture conversations that strengthen their bond with the public."
Conservatives have been able to establish organic connections with working Americans through culture conversations, despite the lack of policy support. However, it is crucial to find more authentic connection points to strengthen shared values with these groups.
DNC chair Jaime Harrison complimented Murphy's presentation.
Sen. JD Vance should be targeted by the party in the next White House race, according to Harrison, who is not seeking a second term as head of the national party committee.
It would be a significant mistake to solely concentrate on Donald Trump and not JD Vance during the 2028 race, as Harrison emphasized.
