Biden has faced growing criticism, and Obama has yet to speak out.
A growing number of Obama's former advisers and allies are considering working against Biden's re-election.
Last month, former Obama adviser David Axelrod raised concerns about Biden's poor debate performance, which was later echoed by a group of former advisers known as the "Obama bros" and actor George Clooney, who is close to the former president.
On Wednesday, Jon Favreau, Obama's former speechwriter, spoke out about Biden's mental fitness, breaking his silence just hours after George Clooney published a damning op-ed in The New York Times urging the president to abandon his plans to run for president in 2024.
During a CNN appearance, Jon Favreau stated that it was not surprising to anyone at the June fundraiser in Los Angeles, including himself and Clooney, that Clooney was exactly right, and every person he talked to agreed with him, except for those working for Joe Biden.
"After the fundraiser, Emily turned to me and asked, "What are we going to do?" I replied, "There's a debate in a week. If he does well, we'll assume he was just tired from flying back from Europe, and that'll be that. But if he performs poorly, the whole country will be talking about it. So, here we are.""
Clooney argued that Democratic Party leaders should cease attempting to convince Americans that they "didn't witness what we just witnessed," and accused them of disregarding "indications" regarding Biden.
The actor stated that the Biden who appeared at the fundraiser was not the "big F-ing deal" Biden of 2010, nor was he the same man who showed up at the debate.
On Tuesday, Favreau, along with Tommy Vietor and Jon Lovett, devoted the majority of their "Pod Save America" episode to criticizing Biden's poor performance in the first presidential debate, as well as in a subsequent interview.
Vietor stated that he found the interview challenging to watch and believed it was subpar, as part of Biden's attempt to address criticism calling for him to withdraw from the presidential race.
"Biden's interview did not solve the political problem that arose from the debate, and he was more concerned because he struggled to speak clearly and coherently."
Biden's poor performance in the debate was not adequately explained by his excuses of travel and sickness, according to Vietor, who argued that he failed to present a compelling second-term agenda that would persuade swing voters to choose him over Trump.
Lovett acknowledged that the interview was a challenging environment for him to excel, despite his best efforts, due to the fact that it took place more than a week after the debate, was brief, and he was only participating in one.
""The explanations are unclear and do not address our concerns about what we saw that night. Is that right?" he said."
"If you want to increase the pressure in one interview, it can't be another instance of you being difficult to comprehend, not because he's gentle or mumbling, but because your thought process is unclear," he stated. "The stakes are extremely high. Trump is a significant danger, but either he will pursue the case or someone else will, and currently, we are not getting either."
Although Biden's interview was "more coherent than the debate," Favreau expressed concern that Biden's lack of urgency and message might hinder his ability to recover from the debate's poor performance. He pointed to recent polling indicating that Biden is trailing Trump in every crucial swing state.
How will you persuade undecided voters to support you over Trump when you have that message with George Stephanopoulos?
While Lovett argued that Biden wasn't delivering the message effectively, Vietor later said it seemed like a clear-cut choice that they'd have a better chance with someone else.
"Lovett stated that the George Stephanopoulos interview was unbearable to watch. He added that the interview was a complete disaster, and Stephanopoulos did a poor job of explaining his reasons for running, what happened at the debate, and why he was the best candidate to defeat Trump. In Lovett's opinion, Stephanopoulos was doing a terrible job."
Obama has remained silent on the mounting criticism of Biden, even though he initially defended him after the debate.
