A GOP senator unveils the "transformational" legislation that the party aims to pass in 2025.
The Senate will be under Republican control in 2025.
In 2025, the Republican Senate, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., will prioritize passing a "transformational" border security bill, as immigration remains a top political issue.
The Republican Senate will prioritize a transformational border security bill in January 2025, which will be considered and passed by the budget committee, according to Graham, who has been involved in several bipartisan immigration efforts.
"Instead of releasing people, we should increase the number of bed spaces to detain them," Graham said. "We should increase the number of ICE agents to handle those who need to be deported. Once the wall is finished, we can add technology to monitor the border and have better control over it."
He stated that reconciliation would be our top priority, stating it would "go first."
During the 2024 campaign, immigration and border security were among the top concerns of voters, and President-elect Trump won the election by pledging a mass deportation campaign and increased border security.
Immigration reform can be facilitated by the provision of additional resources and changes to immigration law, which have been supported by Republicans in the House and Senate, as expressed by many lawmakers during their election campaigns. While much of the deportation operation can be executed through executive action, Congress can play a crucial role in supporting such efforts.
In 2023, the House passed a comprehensive bill on border security and asylum reform, H.R. 2, but it has not been considered by the Senate, which is currently under Democratic control. This year, Democrats introduced a bipartisan bill on border security that included increased funding for border agencies. However, Republicans rejected the bill due to the provisions they believed would legalize high levels of illegal immigration.
At a hearing discussing the effects of a mass deportation operation, Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., highlighted the potential impact on prices if a large number of illegal immigrants were removed.
The cost of food and housing is expected to increase in the upcoming year. As a result, Americans should prepare for a more expensive Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, as well as a longer wait for their first home due to rising construction costs.
