A GOP congresswoman backed by Trump manages to fend off a challenge from the right in a deeply conservative New York House district.
Businessman Mario Fratto loses to Rep. Claudia Tenney in race for New York's 24th Congressional District.
A Republican lawmaker who received support from former President Trump has successfully fended off a right-wing challenge in her predominantly conservative upstate New York House district.
In the Republican primary for New York's 24th Congressional District, attorney and businessman Mario Fratto was defeated by Rep. Claudia Tenney. Tenney led by approximately XX% when the Associated Press declared the race.
During the campaign, Fratto labeled Tenney a "RINO" and accused her of being insufficiently conservative on several issues, while Tenney portrayed Fratto as antisemitic and radical.
In the 2022 Republican primary for the district, Tenney and Fratto faced off for the second time, with Tenney winning just under 54% of the vote and Fratto receiving 40%.
Given the conservative leanings of her district, Tenney's win suggests she will likely secure a fourth term in the House of Representatives.
She was first elected in 2016 to represent New York's 22nd Congressional District, but she lost her re-election bid in 2018. She was re-elected in 2020 to represent the 22nd District, but after redistricting across the state, she ran for the 24th District in 2022 and was successful.
Republican elections analysts consider the race to be either "secure" or "uncontested."
