A former Trump official anticipates a "complete shift in mindset" at the southern border and praises the "excellent" selection to head the DHS.
Chad Wolf served as head of the Department of Homeland Security under the first Trump administration.
A former official from the first Trump administration predicts a complete shift in how the southern border is managed under the Biden administration, praising President-elect Trump's choice of South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as an excellent selection.
According to former acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf, who spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital, you can expect a complete mindset change along the border.
The president emphasized the importance of holding people accountable, restarting border wall construction, and implementing measures to stop asylum shopping and forum shopping. He also highlighted the need for quick return of individuals and a serious approach to address the ongoing border crisis, which he described as the worst in the country's history.
"So basically, almost doing everything completely different."
Wolf praised Noem's selection as Trump's pick to lead the DHS, citing her past actions as governor to deploy the National Guard to the southern border.
"Governor Noem is a great choice," he said. "She has been a successful governor and has been proactive in supporting the Border security mission with her National Guard. She also has extensive experience working with FEMA on natural disasters," he said. "I’m confident she will excel."
Biden's administration will leave Trump with a historic migrant crisis, with numbers decreasing since June. Trump campaigned on tackling illegal immigration and plans to launch a historic mass deportation campaign.
He is likely to reintroduce some of the policies he implemented during his first term, including border wall construction, the Remain-in-Mexico policy, and Asylum Cooperative Agreements with Northern Triangle countries.
This week, he named Thomas Homan, the former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director, as the "border czar" to manage deportations and border security.
The America First Policy Institute's Wolf stated that a single policy solution is not enough for the complex border issue, which involves various populations. Nevertheless, he emphasized the need to target the cartels.
"Targeting the cartels is crucial in addressing the human trafficking and narcotics smuggling across the border. President Trump has emphasized the need to get serious about the cartels, and I believe this is a wise approach."
He mentioned that resources would be a problem and that Congress could assist in addressing this issue. He referenced the House GOP border bill, HR 2, which passed the House in 2023 but has not been successful in the Senate.
"Using presidential authority and DHS, Department of Justice authority, and others, a lot can be accomplished, he emphasized. If Congress wants to participate, H.R. 2 is a good starting point."
There will be a price tag for increasing the number of detention beds, border officers, and agreements with state and local officials, as he noted.
"I agree that's acceptable because over the past four years, billions of dollars have been spent to facilitate more illegal migrants entering the country. However, I believe we should redirect that money to enforce the law and remove undocumented individuals from the United States, which is what the American people desire."
