A comedian who made a joke about Puerto Rico at a Madison Square Garden event has faced criticism from AOC and other individuals.
Danielle Alvarez, senior adviser to the Trump campaign, stated that the joke does not represent the views of President Trump or the campaign.
At a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe drew criticism from both sides of the political spectrum with a joke about Puerto Rico.
"There's a floating island of garbage in the ocean right now, according to Hinchcliffe, who thinks it's called Puerto Rico."
The Trump campaign quickly disavowed the joke, stating that it did not align with the views of President Trump or the campaign, as noted by senior adviser Danielle Alvarez in a statement, according to reports.
During a Twitch stream with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York responded to Hinchcliffe's joke.
In response to the clip, Walz asked, "Who is that jackwad?"
The comedian's joke was criticized by Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent.
The Democrat from New York stated that this is what people think about anyone who makes less money than them, those who serve them food in a restaurant, and those who fold their clothes in a store.
According to her congressional website, the lawmaker's mother was born and raised in Puerto Rico.
In a post on X, Hinchcliffe declared his love and vacation spots in Puerto Rico after watching a clip of Ocasio-Cortez and Walz.
"These individuals lack a sense of humor. It's astonishing that a vice presidential candidate would interrupt his busy schedule to analyze a joke taken out of context and make it seem racist," he wrote. "I adore Puerto Rico and frequently visit there. I joked about everyone... please watch the entire set. I am a comedian, Tim... perhaps it's time to switch to a different brand of tampon."
Hinchcliffe was accused by Ocasio-Cortez of boosting neo-Nazis, and he responded with a scolding.
She tweeted: "You're opening for Trump by calling Puerto Rico a floating pile of garbage. 4,000+ Puerto Ricans died under him. This isn't the comedy store. You're using your set to boost neo-Nazis like MTG & stripping women's rights to the Stone Age. Your 'sense of humor' doesn’t change that."
"Before anyone tries to dismiss this as politically correct nonsense, I've been to Kill Tony shows. I'm from the Bronx. I don't care about politically correct humor. But don't pretend that your support for Trump is a joke. Take responsibility for it. You're choosing to do a set for him," she said in another post.
The lawmaker accused the comedian of dishing out "red-meat racism."
She tweeted about being unable to get over a man telling someone else to change tampons when he himself was wearing Depends after attending a Trump rally and spreading red-meat racism to a crowd of bigots.
Ocasio-Cortez clarified in a tweet that while some people may enjoy drinking piña coladas, they don't necessarily love Puerto Rico.
Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York also blasted the comedian.
The congressman tweeted that as a Puerto Rican, he is tempted to call Tony Hinchcliffe racist garbage, but doing so would be an insult to garbage. When casting their ballots at the voting booth, Latinos should never forget the racism that Donald Trump seems all too willing to platform.
Republicans also criticized the comedian.
Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., tweeted, "This is not a joke. It’s completely classless & in poor taste. Puerto Rico is the crown jewel of the Caribbean & home to many of the most patriotic Americans I know. @TonyHinchcliffe clearly isn’t funny & definitely doesn’t reflect my values or those of the Republican Party."
Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, a Republican from New York, proudly stated, "I am Puerto Rican. My mother was born and raised on the island. Puerto Rico is a beautiful country with a rich culture and an essential part of the USA. The only thing that was 'garbage' was a bad comedy set. Stay on message."
