US swimmer Hunter Armstrong says his faith provides him with a sense of purpose and direction: "I am a Christian Olympian."
After overcoming difficulties, swimmer reveals his religious beliefs and shares how he achieved gold at the Paris Olympics.
After the 2024 Paris Olympics, Hunter Armstrong, a U.S. swimmer, returned to Columbus, Ohio, with two impressive medals.
In the Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay, Armstrong earned a gold medal, while in the Medley relay, he won a silver medal.
Despite winning a gold medal in the 2020 Olympics, Armstrong stated that he had not achieved all of his goals during that competition.
In an on-camera interview, Armstrong stated, "I wanted to improve upon my previous performance, and I was successful in doing so. This can be seen as a form of redemption." (Video link: [insert link here])
Winning gold in 2024 brought tears to his eyes, but this time it felt different.
"Although I earned one in Tokyo, it was during a preliminary relay, so I couldn't compete for it. However, I still played a crucial role by providing a lane for my teammates. But, I am proud to say that I earned this one, and I couldn't have asked for a better team to do it with."
His big win, according to Armstrong, was due to his faith, which he considers the cornerstone of his life.
He stated that he does not view himself as an Olympian in his daily life, but he is a Christian every day. However, when he competes, he becomes a Christian Olympian.
While Armstrong has always been a believer, he admitted that he didn't always maintain his faith as strongly as he does now, and that he had drifted from it as he grew older.
He said, "Although I am a believer, I couldn't fully accept it."
Armstrong stated that he didn't have a relationship with God and felt like he was taking advantage of Him because he only remembered about faith when he needed it.
"When stressed or worried, I pray in competition."
During his journey, Armstrong shared the loneliness he felt after going through a life-changing break-up and other personal challenges.
"The largest shift was when I recognized that I needed to embrace this. If you prioritize something other than God, He'll remove it."
Fellow swimmers have created a community of faith, as Armstrong stated, with a strong sense of camaraderie among them.
"In the Middle East, I would practice, return, lie in bed, sleep, and repeat the process for the next practice."
Carson Foster invited him to a Bible study, according to what he said.
"Despite feeling sad and lazy, I went to the event and it was amazing."
During his current season of life, Armstrong has learned a great lesson by relying on scripture.
God isolates a man to make him great, as the individual stated to Planet Chronicle Digital, explaining how everyone in his life had left him over the past five to six months.
"And it was heartbreaking. I'd never been so alone."
"God was working in my life because He had to tear down who I was in order to build me into the person He had planned for me to become," he added.
According to the American Enterprise Institute's Survey Center on American Life, 29% of millennials, 25% of Generation X, and 34% of Generation Z identify as religiously unaffiliated.
The athlete, 23 years old, advised the younger generation to prioritize faith and understand its role in their lives.
"Every day, we witness signs that God is working in our lives. For instance, this morning we woke up to a beautiful day."
"There's always signs that He's with us."
Currently, Armstrong has set aside six months for a break from swimming, but he is already feeling restless.
I miss the physical exertion and mental challenge of working out. I may or may not participate in short course worlds in Budapest in December. I'll decide based on my current physical and mental state.
"The following major event will be the world championships held in Singapore during the summer."
