During a flag retreat ceremony at Disney's Magic Kingdom, a 100-year-old WWII veteran was honored.
On Friday, William 'Bill' A. Connelly, a World War II veteran, was honored in Disney's Magic Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida.
On Friday evening at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Orlando, retired U.S. Army Col. William "Bill" A. Connelly, 100, was honored during a flag retreat ceremony surrounded by loved ones.
As the flag was lowered and folded to be given to him, Connelly stood tall and proud, saluting it in honor of late former President Jimmy Carter.
Connelly was thanked by park visitors for his service after Disney cast members shook his hand.
The veteran and his family, who are not only Disney fans but have also been to the parks and on a Disney cruise, expressed their satisfaction after the ceremony.
Connelly revealed that the key to a long life is surrounding oneself with happy individuals.
Connelly, a native of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, was drafted into the Army at the age of 18. He served with the 115th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army and fought in the battle on D-Day at Omaha Beach, Normandy, as per his family's biography.
He was permitted to complete high school, attend college as part of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, obtain his bachelor of arts degree, and subsequently re-enlist in the Army as an officer.
He was active in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II, including the Normandy landing. He had a 27-year military career and received the Bronze Star for outstanding service in a combat zone.
Connelly spent most of his Army career with the Counterintelligence Corps. He is the father of three daughters, a grandfather of six, and a great-grandfather of six. Connelly turned 100 on Saturday.
Connelly's wife of 63 years, Jean, passed away in 2016.
While conversing with Planet Chronicle Digital, the WWII veteran shared some amusing anecdotes, and his humility was evident when he stated that his military service was "not particularly remarkable."
The flag retreat ceremony in the town square of Main Street, USA, has been held since the park's opening on October 1, 1971. The ceremony includes the pledge of allegiance, the national anthem, and "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Disney World's website states that the ceremony is a tribute, expressing gratitude to veterans for their service, sacrifice, and commitment to safeguarding our nation.
