Tragic accidents claim the lives of husband and wife after Christmas: 'Unspeakable'
Mary Lou Levitan and Scott, both 66 years old.
According to local officials, a Michigan couple died in two separate accidents between Christmas and New Year's Day.
On December 26th, a 66-year-old man named Scott Levitan from Livonia, a suburb west of Detroit, fell into a frozen lake and subsequently passed away.
At Lake George in Addison Township, a Michigan resident was drilling a hole in the ice while ice-fishing with his 15-year-old grandson.
While trying to save his grandfather's life, the teenager accidentally fell into the lake and was later rescued and treated for his injuries.
"According to the sheriff's office, the two had gone onto the ice to drill a hole for ice fishing when the ice gave way, causing the grandfather to fall into the ice water. The boy called 911 and tried to help his grandfather out of the water, but the ice broke and he too fell into the water."
A local resident spotted the Levitans and swiftly retrieved a kayak to save them.
"The sheriff's office reported that the rescuer helped the boy get out of the water and then retrieved a second kayak to aid the grandfather. However, the neighbor was unable to pull the grandfather out of the water due to the breaking ice, but managed to keep the grandfather's head above the water until help arrived."
On the following day, Mary Lou Levitan was heading to retrieve her husband's car when she tragically passed away in a car crash, as per police reports. At the time, Scott Levitan was critically injured and on life support.
An unknown reason led a 19-year-old driver to cross into the northbound lane of an Oakland Township road, resulting in a collision with the car Mary Lou Levitan was riding in.
On Dec. 27, Mary Lou Levitan, a backseat passenger in a vehicle, was declared dead at the scene of a crash. Her husband was taken off life support on Dec. 31.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard conveyed his sympathies to the Levitans.
""Within 24 hours of each other, this family experienced two unrelated tragedies that left them devastated," Bouchard stated."
"It's difficult to comprehend the situation. We extend our sympathies to the family."
