Some people are taking dorm-room décor to excessive levels, but here are 4 ways to keep it under control.

Once again, thousands of young adults are moving into their college dorms across the country, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

Most dorm rooms are notorious for being small and mundane.

Certainly, dorm rooms have come a long way from the simple furnishings of the past, featuring now more than just a few decorative pillows, posters on the wall, random twinkle lights, and a basic desk lamp.

For some today, dorm rooms are customized and upgraded beyond expectations.

High-end furnishings and professionally designed dorm room masterpieces are being showcased by proud parents and chic students.

Ava Hunt, 18, the daughter of Tavia and Clark Hunt, transformed her Southern Methodist University dorm room in Texas into a luxurious pink oasis with neon lights, fashionable decor, and high-end furniture.

Tavia Hunt posted pictures of her daughter’s dorm room on Instagram.

The photo captured a heartwarming hug between the mother and daughter, as well as a stunning shot of the daughter's new home.

Also, the photos included a sweet message wishing her daughter well.

The messages were heartwarming overall.

How about the millions of other college students who are currently moving into dorms? What are their expectations and situations?

What is the focus of some, but not all, of today's intricate dorm room designs?

Four mental health professional tips for grounding and realism for both parents and students.

1. Manage expectations to keep dorm rooms realistic and affordable

Florida-based psychotherapist and author Amy Morin stated that parents and college students experience immense pressure to maintain impressive dorm decorations.

Morin informed Planet Chronicle Digital that this could cause young people to worry about not fitting in and make some parents feel guilty about not being able to overindulge.

She added, "It could make some families think, 'People like us don't go to college because we can't afford those things,'."

2. Give dorm-room décor a reality check

Experts suggest that while it's enjoyable to design a dorm room that mirrors one's taste and preferences, it's important to remember that a dorm room is merely a brief pause in one's journey.

"Dorm rooms aren't meant to be lasting or permanent spaces."

Morin stated that the time spent in a dorm room is brief in comparison to the whole of life, and dorm rooms are not intended to be long-term or permanent dwellings.

Unnecessarily decorating for a brief circumstance is excessive, she opined.

3. Reflect on what's really driving a desire to spend big bucks

Morin stated that parents who take on debt to create a dreamy dorm room are probably doing so to meet their own requirements.

Morin stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that parents may be preoccupying themselves with their own sorrow over a child leaving, or they could be overindulging their child in a specific area due to secret concerns about the child's deficiencies in another area.

Decorations can be used to maintain the childlike treatment of college students, as she observed.

Morin stated that many parents are upset about their children growing up and to help them continue treating their students as if they are much younger children, they fill their rooms with stuffed animals and fairy-tale decorations.

4. Remember that success at college isn’t determined by room décor

College or lifelong success is unlikely to be achieved through extravagant dorm rooms.

Demonstrating the importance of hard work and earning success can be a great opportunity for parents when their children go off to college.

Reinforcing what you truly value to your child, such as obtaining a good education, showing kindness to others, or trying new experiences, is a prime opportunity, according to Morin.
