Reddit user defended after dad leaves him 'effectively homeless' becomes: Reddit user defended after being left 'effectively homeless' by his dad.
The Redditor was given less than 30 days' notice that he would not be permitted to reside with his father.
Other Reddit users agreed that a user who informed his father that he was now "effectively homeless" was justified in doing so.
"OkNumber787" posted on Reddit's "Am I the A--hole" (AITA) subreddit on Friday, August 16, asking if they were the asshole for telling their dad that he had effectively made them homeless.
OkNumber787 shared that he is a 22-year-old male who left his father's home 1.5 years ago.
OkNumber787 stated that the agreement he reached with me was that I could always return home if I was facing financial difficulties, as I am a university student and also work full-time.
Since around July, he and I have agreed that he would allow me to move back in with him starting on September 1, when his current lease ends.
That arrangement, however, recently changed.
"Two weeks before my lease is up, he informed me that his current girlfriend doesn't approve of me living there and that I need to find an alternative arrangement."
He said that he didn't want to disturb his girlfriend in the basement late at night because he gets off work very late (he would have been quiet; the only noise would have been the alarm going off for 5 seconds when he opened the door).
"He tried to convince his father to let him move back in, but despite months of agreement, his father is still refusing. He told his father that he has effectively made him homeless and that if he had known sooner, he would have found a different place to stay."
"He told me I needed to grow up and handle this like an adult, to figure out my own problems."
His father refused to move, asserting, "He informed me that I must mature and handle this like an adult, by solving my own issues."
"Most landlords haven't rented out for September 1st yet, so I'll have to find a place for October 1st," said OkNumber787, who would likely have to couch-surf for months. "AITA?"
OkNumber787 mentioned in a follow-up comment to his post that he asked a few coworkers if they needed an extra roommate to help with rent, and his grandparents also agreed to let him stay with them. However, they do not reside near his job or school.
Currently, my two top choices are these, stated OkNumber787.
The AITA subreddit allows users to respond to posts and designate the poster as "NTA," "YTA," "NAH," or "ESH."
Rewritten sentence: "You can vote for the responses you find helpful and against the ones you don't."
Almost all of the nearly 1,500 responses to OkNumber787's post stated that he was "NTA" and that his father was behaving irrationally.
"NTA. It's unfortunate that he's not willing to temporarily house you to give you time to find another option, despite having made a commitment to you," said Reddit user "owls_and_cardinals" in the top-upvoted reply.
The user stated, "He is prioritizing his girlfriend's preferences over your fundamental requirements, and justifies it by saying 'You're an adult, figure it out.' Despite being an adult, you had an agreement, and you did not make other arrangements. It is inappropriate for him to withdraw that at this point."
OkNumber787's father was not behaving like an adult in the housing policy situation.
""Spinnerofyarn" stated that adults typically require at least 30 days' notice to secure new housing, which was the arrangement they had made. The user questioned how this was not being an adult, and asked if the person would also fund six weeks of a hotel and first and last payments for a new place to live since they hadn't anticipated needing it. The user had previously stated that they would house them if needed."
"Having-hope3594 said that there is a reason for 30 days being the standard, especially if you work full-time."
OkNumber787 and a family therapist were contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for additional comments and updates.
