Dr. Francisco Contreras, director, president and chair of the Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital that the treatment of cancer has undergone substantial changes over time.

As a well-known cancer treatment center, the Oasis of Hope Hospital provides alternative therapies.

The facility, founded by esteemed physician Dr. Ernesto Contreras, is dedicated to providing innovative health care solutions to its patients.

The various forms of cancer present unique obstacles to human health.

Although it is intricate, various forms of cancer offer several treatment alternatives.

The CDC's website states that, aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the United States.

A range of treatment options, including surgery, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, and hormone therapy, are available for managing breast cancer.

"Surgery, once highly invasive, now has better results with a more complex approach in cancer treatment," said Contreras.

"The treatment that has undergone the most significant transformation, radiation, is aided by cutting-edge technology that enables precise targeting of tumors with minimal harm to surrounding tissues, a longstanding issue."

The fight against breast cancer is being expanded through ongoing research into immunotherapies and innovative drug combinations.

Our center offers a wealth of immunotherapy options, setting us apart from other oncology facilities worldwide, said Contreras.

Cancer of the colon, also known as colorectal cancer, is highly treatable and often curable.

According to the National Cancer Institute, surgery is the primary treatment and results in a cure for approximately 50% of patients, but there are various treatment modalities available.

In the next 15 years, chemotherapy may become obsolete, as there have been no significant advancements in this field over the past decade.

Advanced colorectal cancer has been successfully treated with targeted therapies like anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF medications.

Targeted therapy utilizes drugs or substances that selectively target specific cancer cells. It can be given alone or combined with other therapeutic methods such as conventional chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy.

The issue is the high cost of targeted therapies, which can range from $10,000 to more than $1 million per month, making it difficult for patients with many mutations to afford them.

Checkpoint inhibitors and other immunotherapies are showing promise as effective treatments for colorectal cancer.

"Immunotherapies are the most promising approach, and we have been using them for six decades," Contreras stated. "We believe that supporting a patient's immune system is more impactful than just trying to eliminate a tumor, especially when it becomes a persistent issue in their life."

Prostate cancer, predominantly affecting men, is characterized by its slow growth.

Prostate cancer treatment options include active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapies, which are being investigated for their potential to boost the body's immune response against cancer cells.

Contreras stated that in his opinion, immunotherapies are the most effective way to treat cancer.

According to Contreras, managing stress levels, using laughter, incorporating music therapy, and taking medication are all effective ways to calm the body. When combined, these methods can increase the effectiveness of immunotherapies.

Ovarian cancer, known for its late-stage diagnosis, has made strides in treatment options.

Surgery to remove tumors, combined with chemotherapy, remains a standard approach.

PARP inhibitors have shown promise, particularly in cases with specific genetic mutations, according to Contreras.

Contreras stated that we frequently resort to hormone therapy when treating ovarian cancers that respond to hormones.

By administering medications that inhibit or decrease hormone production, hormone therapy aims to impede the proliferation of cancer cells.

Contreras emphasized the importance of this approach, particularly in cases where hormones have a significant impact, enabling us to develop a more customized and successful treatment plan for our patients.

Ovarian cancer patients now have more treatment options due to ongoing research into immunotherapies.

With ongoing research and innovation, the future for patients with these cancers is increasingly optimistic, as hope grows for a time when cancer can be both treated and prevented.
