A cardiologist suggests that the solution to hiccups may be found in your kitchen.
Figuring out how to stop hiccups can be as perplexing as experiencing them.

An effective way to stop hiccups is by dripping lemon or lime juice into the back of the throat, as stated in a recent video.
"It’ll stop them almost immediately."
The doctor, with nearly 400,000 TikTok followers, stated that the effectiveness of this is unknown, but provided some possible explanations.
He stated that the first could be the stimulation of the vagus nerve, which extends from the brain to below the diaphragm.
According to London, consuming lemon or lime juice can "reset the sensory input from the diaphragm and stop the hiccup arc."
He suggested that activating the muscles in the back of the throat or the esophagus might help with the trick.
The third possible explanation from the doctor for why consuming lemon or lime juice may alleviate hiccups is due to a sudden shift in the throat's pitch.
London stated that the hack could be a simple distraction, which stops hiccups by providing a sudden sensory input.
The doctor received thanks from TikTok users for his advice, along with their own suggestions.
One user stated that their science teacher used to make them hold their nose and cover their ears while drinking water.
Another person stated, "I have spent my entire life looking for this information."
What exactly are hiccups?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, hiccups are characterized as "recurrent contractions of the diaphragm accompanied by a 'hic' sound resulting from the closure of the vocal cords."
The clinic stated that the condition typically arises when something "stimulates the nerves," resulting in the diaphragm contracting.
There are also different types of hiccups.
Transient is the most common, lasting a few seconds or minutes.
According to Cleveland Clinic, hiccups can be triggered by overeating or eating quickly, consuming spicy foods, drinking carbonated beverages, inhaling excessive air, smoking tobacco or cannabis, and drinking alcohol.
Some potential hiccup cures include holding your breath, sipping cold water, pressing on your eyes, pulling on your tongue, biting into a lemon, breathing into a paper bag, and swallowing a spoonful of sugar.

When should you seek medical attention?
Dr. Mark Loafman, a board-certified family physician with Cook County Health in Chicago, Illinois, advised people to seek medical attention if their hiccups persist for hours, frequently recur, or interfere with basic function, as previously stated by him to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Persistent hiccups can indicate serious health conditions.
According to the Mayo Clinic, central nervous disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, and esophageal issues are some of the conditions that can affect the digestive system.
