After President-elect Trump's victory, celebrities have vowed to leave the country.
Following the 2024 presidential election, numerous Americans, particularly celebrities, have vowed to renounce their citizenship and relocate to other countries.
Numerous countries provide citizenship routes for Americans looking to obtain a second passport through ancestry.
Here is a list of nine countries that allow citizenship by descent, arranged alphabetically.
1. Ghana
Ghanaian citizenship can be obtained by individuals with a Ghanaian parent under the country's Citizenship Act of 2002. The "Year of Return" initiative invites African Americans and Afro Caribbeans to rediscover their roots.
Ghana has a "Right of Abode" program that enables individuals with African ancestry to reside in the country permanently without a visa, as long as they can verify their heritage.
2. Germany
Individuals with a German parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent can obtain German citizenship through descent. Special provisions are in place for those whose ancestors lost citizenship under the Nazi regime due to political, racial, or religious persecution.
If a child was born before July 1, 1993, and their father is German while their mother is not, they may claim German citizenship if paternity was established before the age of 23.
3. Hungary
Hungarian citizenship can be claimed by individuals with Hungarian ancestry, irrespective of the number of generations spent abroad. Language proficiency in Hungarian is not necessary.
Those who marry a Hungarian citizen for at least five years or 10 years without children can obtain Hungarian citizenship through naturalization.
4. India
While India does not permit dual citizenship, it offers Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status, which includes a perpetual, multiple-entry visa and parallels the advantages of non-resident Indians (NRIs), such as economic and educational perks.
Applicants must have an Indian parent or grandparent and cannot be of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin to qualify.
5. Ireland
Individuals with a parent born in Ireland before January 1, 2005 are automatically considered citizens of the country.
Individuals with Irish grandparents can apply for citizenship through the "Foreign Birth Registration" process, which is administered in Dublin. This process is also open to great-grandchildren, but additional documentation is typically required.
6. Italy
If an applicant's Italian ancestor did not naturalize abroad before the birth of their child in their direct line, Italy grants citizenship by descent.
Those with an Italian ancestor must have been born after Jan. 1, 1948, and naturalization is available for those married to an Italian citizen or those who have resided in Italy for at least 10 years.
7. Poland
Those with ancestors born in Poland or its former territories can obtain Polish citizenship through descent.
To maintain their Polish citizenship, applicants must demonstrate that their ancestors resided in Poland after 1920 and provide original Polish-issued documents.
8. Portugal
Individuals with at least one Portuguese grandparent can obtain Portuguese citizenship.
To apply for Portuguese ancestry, applicants must present birth certificates linking them to their Portuguese ancestor and the application process is handled solely in Portugal, necessitating an in-person visit.
9. Spain
Individuals with a Spanish parent or grandparent, as well as adoptees under the age of 18 by Spanish nationals, can apply for Spanish citizenship.
In order to complete their citizenship application, candidates must pass two tests: the DELE A2 for basic Spanish language proficiency and the CCSE, which assesses cultural knowledge and familiarity with the constitution.
It is uncertain if any celebrities who have pledged to leave the U.S. will do so before President-elect Trump is inaugurated in January.
