Nearly 10 years after being lost in Las Vegas, a dog has been found in a 'rough shape'.
Several infections and dental issues were found in the discovered dog.
Nearly a decade after he disappeared, a Las Vegas woman is overjoyed that her dog has returned safely at home.
In 2015, Judith Monarrez, who was 37 years old, lost her 2-year-old Chihuahua mix named Gizmo when he slipped out of her backyard on February 3rd, as reported by the Associated Press.
Someone spotted Gizmo being put into a "reddish car," but after that, he was nowhere to be found on the Facebook page set up to find the dog.
Until July 17, 2024, Monarrez had been waiting for an email she received: someone had found Gizmo.
An emergency veterinarian's office in Henderson, Nevada, received the dog that had been recovered.
At the vet, a microchip scan revealed that Monarrez's beloved pup had been located.
A woman dropped off Gizmo at the Animal Emergency Center in Henderson, according to Monarrez on the "Bring Gizmo Home" Facebook page.
She wrote that the woman claimed they had been trying to catch him for two months, but he was severely matted and his nails were overgrown and curled.
Gizmo was struggling to stand and walk, Monarrez stated. She added on Facebook that he may have neck fractures.
The Associated Press reported that Monarrez was overjoyed to be reunited with her dog and thanked the microchip for bringing them back together.
Monarrez recognized Gizmo instantly when looking into his eyes, despite his different appearance, according to the Associated Press.
"As soon as I mentioned his name, he tilted his head and continued to stare at me."
Gizmo's time away from Monarrez was not an easy one.
Monnarrez's dog was discovered in a poor condition with several infections and dental problems, prompting her to start a GoFundMe page.
"I don't know what Gizmo went through all these years separated from us."
Monarrez wrote on the GoFundMe page, "We are all a little shocked at his condition. I don't know what Gizmo went through all these years separated from us, but I'm so happy he's home now and we can help him heal. The page has raised more than double its $4,000 goal."
In a July 23 update, Monarrez stated that Gizmo is making progress towards recovery and is currently in good health.
"He has been finding his way around the house and has been snuggling up to his brother Benji," she wrote. "He's discovered his voice and we heard him bark at the doorbell for the first time since he's been back home."
"His eye infection seems to be responding well to medications."
She stated that his eye infection is responding well to the medications he was prescribed and he will have a follow-up appointment in a week.
Monarrez and her parents will shower Gizmo with all the love they were holding onto for all those years, as they told the Associated Press.
Monarrez was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for any further information regarding Gizmo's recovery.
From August 1st, all cats and dogs in Las Vegas over 4 months old must have a microchip, according to the AP.
The American Veterinary Medical Association's website stated that a microchip is a tiny electronic device encased in a glass cylinder, roughly the size of a grain of rice.
When scanned, microchips in pets are activated and do not require a battery. They store information about the pet's owner and contact details.
The city of Las Vegas stated on its website that failing to microchip a pet will result in a misdemeanor and upon conviction may be punished by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment of up to six months or a combination of both.
