Lottery winner refuses to give brother a large sum of money, citing family tension: "I was accused of being selfish."
Family torn apart by sudden windfall as sister tries to do what's right.
The majority of Reddit users agreed with a woman's pragmatic and thoughtful view of a personal dilemma involving a lottery win and a financially desperate brother, and deemed her "not in the wrong."
In less than a day, the post has garnered 3,600 reactions and 1,500 comments.
The woman, who introduced herself as Vedoric, stated that she had recently won a substantial sum of money in the lottery. Although it was not a jackpot, the amount, which totaled around $500,000 (pretax), would have a significant impact on her life.
She stated that she has been cautious with money and intends to utilize it to settle her student loans, make a down payment on a house, and possibly establish a small business she has long aspired to.
Apparently, things got complicated when a family member discovered her winnings.
"For years, he has been grappling with financial difficulties because of poor financial management and some misfortune, resulting in a substantial amount of debt."
"I’ve seen him blow through money before."
She went on to congratulate her brother, but immediately after, he asked for $30,000 to pay off his debts and get back on his feet.
She expressed concern that his past behavior of spending money recklessly might indicate another cycle of financial instability.
She wrote in her post that she was willing to help him create a budget plan and even give him a smaller amount, like $5,000, to help with immediate needs, but he got really upset.
"I feel conflicted because I do care about my brother."
Her parents have differing opinions on the issue. While her mother believes that family should assist one another, her father agrees that her brother must learn to manage his finances independently.
Although I care deeply about my brother, I am conflicted because I also believe in managing my finances responsibly and ensuring my money lasts.
Did she ask if she was wrong for not giving her brother a larger portion of her lottery winnings, even though he was struggling financially?
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to a psychologist for thoughts on the matter.
"If you want to help out, buy him a grocery store gift card so he can buy food or gas."
It's a good buffer to give yourself some room to feel more comfortable taking some risks and pursuing your own life goals. Take advantage of that, protect it, and ignore the noise from others.
As someone else put it more bluntly, "Many lottery winners become bankrupt due to feeling obligated to give money to every person who approaches them."
The same individual considered the original poster not to be at fault for her choices.
"If you want to help out your brother, consider purchasing a grocery store gift card for him so he can buy food or gas."
Someone else gave a more straightforward piece of advice to this lottery winner and others in the future.
"Never mention a sudden windfall to anyone."
