A woman posted a contentious family situation on social media and sought advice from others after her future daughter-in-law, the bride-to-be, failed to choose a mother-in-law dress for her upcoming wedding.

Recently, the older woman posed a question on the "Am I the a--hole" Reddit page: "AITA for making the wedding all about me by being difficult and not taking off work to go dress shopping?"

The mother-in-law travels for work Monday through Friday, she told others.

She wrote on the platform that she has been flying on a plane every Monday and returning on Friday to supervise a project.

Her future daughter-in-law works four days a week with 10-hour shifts.

The bride-to-be wanted to "be there when I get a dress," wrote the future groom's mother about what happened. However, after "much back and forth," the two women got into an argument.  (iStock)

The older woman, who goes by the username "BrilliantMuffin1405" on Reddit, stated that the younger woman desires to meet up to purchase a dress for the wedding. She wants to be present when the older woman selects her dress. Initially, the older woman planned to wear the same long blue dress she typically wears for all weddings, but the younger woman requested a different outfit since it would coordinate with her bridesmaids.

The future mother-in-law checked her calendar and determined that Sunday would be the ideal day to do this, as we both have the day off. However, she informed me that it wouldn't work since that is her rest day.

"She told me no, since that is her rest day."

The older woman said that the bride requested Monday.

I informed her that I couldn't and had to work. I then proposed Friday or Saturday after work, but those suggestions were rejected.

The user "Hot-Explanation9228" posted on the subreddit AITA about a situation they were in.

The younger woman requested that I take time off work. I proposed that she provide me with examples of what she wanted, and I would purchase items similar to those examples on my own. Additionally, I suggested shutting down the conversation.

After much discussion, I decided to wear the blue dress, which led to an argument and my mother-in-law calling me a jerk.

I am making the wedding about me and not taking off work, and my son is upset. I don't think I am being unreasonable.

In her updated post, the woman revealed that her son urged her to share her story on Reddit to get feedback from others. Afterward, he assured her that she could wear the blue dress without any issues.

"I would suggest … she tell her future daughter-in-law that she wants to make her happy, and she understands this is a very important day."

She added that there was no response from her future daughter-in-law.

Over 8,000 people responded to the post, with more than 2,000 commenting. The woman was considered "NTA" by others on the platform.

A licensed clinical psychologist based in California, Dr. Kathy Wilkerson, acknowledged the difficulty of family situations when dealing with relationship issues.

She told Planet Chronicle Digital in an email that everyone has busy lives and desires to make others happy without overextending themselves.

"The original poster is not incorrect in stating that they have a challenging schedule and are unable or unwilling to take time off from work. Certain projects require constant supervision, and since she must travel to the site every week, her physical presence is crucial."

"The goal in these situations," said a clinical psychologist, "is always compromise without giving up too much. Be as flexible as you can and always validate the other person's feelings — even if you don't agree."  (iStock)

Nickerson suggests that the mother-in-law should inform her future daughter-in-law that she wants to make her happy on this important day.

The future DIL will select three dresses that she would be content for the original poster to wear, and the future mother-in-law will choose one of those three.

Nickerson stated that in such circumstances, the objective is always to reach a compromise while not sacrificing too much. One should remain as flexible as possible and acknowledge the other person's emotions, even if they differ from one's own.

"I'd keep your son's room ready for him. He'll be back."

I'll keep your son's room ready for him, as he'll be returning soon.

The top comment on Reddit about the family drama, which received 13,000 "upvotes," expressed the following thoughts: "You've provided practical suggestions to resolve the issue, but she has rejected each of them. It's not your fault. What is it about being with you that she is so determined to be present?"

I'll keep your son's room ready for him, as he'll be returning soon.

The commenter stated that the bride-to-be lacks the ability to compromise, and that they would have lost their temper at the phrase "that's my rest day." They believe that no marriage can be successful without the ability to compromise.

The same person stated, "Does she always behave this way regarding everything? If so, your son is committing a grave error by marrying someone who will cause him immense suffering."

The son was instructed by another individual to convey an apology to his mother for her disappointment over the blue dress and to inform his fiancée that she must either accept his mother's choice of dress or accompany her on a shopping trip on a day she is not working.
