Decor tips to make a room look more spacious through interior design.
A small space doesn't have to be plain.
Excitement while decorating a space could lead to buying more than necessary.
To effectively decorate a small space, like a petite living room, it's essential to minimize the items required and make the most of every square inch available.
Although you have limited space, you can still add personal touches and accessories.
Some interior design tips to elevate your small space are provided below.
Avoid clutter in a small space.
One necessity is a place to store important items.
Several decor options can enhance your space's appearance while also providing a practical storage solution for your items.
Jenna Chused, founder and principal of Chused & Co., an interior design firm in Brooklyn, New York, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital in a phone call that she would design a coffee table that can lift and store things.
Another option for storage is a custom sofa with upholstered drawers, according to Chused.
Alexandra Peck, owner and principal of Alexandra Peck Design in Los Angeles, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital in a phone interview that she loves something similar to a glass cabinet, but it doesn't have to be entirely glass. It should have glass front panels and possibly side panels as well.
"That's a great place to tuck things away."
A storage ottoman was recommended by Peck as a suitable choice for limited spaces.
Peck suggested adding a tray, either lacquered or made of wood, to hold drinks and other items.
Choosing the right furniture for any room, whether big or small, can be a challenging task.
It can be challenging to accommodate guests comfortably in a small space.
A couch with a U-shaped design is an excellent option for seating in a compact area.
"We created a U-shaped sofa in a small room, and it quickly became our favorite space because we can accommodate 10 people around the fireplace," Chused shared about a recent project.
Chused employs a technique of selecting a sofa that complements the room layout to provide ample seating, even in compact spaces.
Peck suggested a smaller sofa with an armchair for a cozy living space.
Peck emphasized the importance of having spacious walking paths around furniture.
"I propose purchasing a shallower sofa and a petite armchair."
A small, round side table could be a nice compliment to your furniture. You could display a candle, a vase of fresh flowers, or even a small coffee table book on top.
Round side tables are a great addition to living rooms, as they take up less space on the floor and create a more open, visually appealing space, according to Peck.
Reflection, reflection, reflection.
By adding reflective elements to a small space, you can create the illusion that it's larger than it actually is, allowing more light to enter the room.
A large mirror can help achieve this effect.
Peck stated that they reflect light around the room and often serve as an additional window for the space.
Mirrors of significant size serve a functional purpose in addition to their decorative function. They enable you to assess your daily attire before leaving the house.
Any space, regardless of its size, can benefit from artwork.
Choosing larger artwork to display can be beneficial in a small space.
Peck stated that although many individuals believe smaller artworks are suitable for smaller spaces, larger artworks can actually enhance the visual area, making the space feel larger.
Another option for adorning a small area is with an artistically designed wallpaper.
Chused suggested to Planet Chronicle Digital that a wallpaper featuring a scene starting at the bottom, such as a forest, with relief at the top in the form of solids or a small-scale pattern would be ideal.
Adding accessories to your living room can make it feel more like home, but too many can lead to clutter and disarray.
A great way to add greenery to your space is with tall houseplants.
Peck suggested adding tall houseplants to draw the eye up and break up the monotony of a room. However, it's important not to overdo it with too many plants.
Another way to enhance your space's aesthetic is by adding tall drapery, which provides vertical interest.
Peck stated that mounting the item high would draw the eye up and make the space feel taller. Additionally, adding an extra layer of texture and fabric would warm up the space for him personally.

Peck advises against choosing a small rug to match a small space, and instead recommends a better option.
She stated that she enjoys creating large rugs for every room.
You may also need additional light sources in your living room, in addition to the natural light that enters the room.
Chused suggested that reading sconces are a great light source to place around the sofa and between windows, as they can be a space-saving option in a smaller room.
A chandelier or a semi-flush mount could be the source of overhead lighting, according to Peck.
Peck recommended tall floor lamps and table lamps as alternative light sources.
