Christian filmmaker Jim Wahlberg claims that Mother Teresa guided him towards God and sobriety while he was incarcerated.
While in prison, I had the opportunity to meet Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and the careers of brothers Donnie and Mark were on the rise.
When Christ entered his life, Jim Wahlberg, a Boston street hustler and alcoholic, was serving time in prison.
His Savior came in the form of Mother Teresa herself.
During her tour of the United States in 1988, the future Saint Teresa of Calcutta visited a Massachusetts prison and attended Mass.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Wahlberg revealed that at a particular moment during Mass, he believed he was gazing upon God while on his path to Christianity and abstinence.
"At that moment, I believed she was divine. My comprehension of her identity was based on that understanding. After experiencing the necessity of a relationship with Christ to live a different life, other aspects became clear to me."
When I got out of prison, I realized that I could live a different way while remaining sober.
On June 3, 1988, Mother Teresa stated upon her arrival in Boston, "Love is what people truly crave, more than just bread."
According to media reports, she intended to visit three Bay State prisons the next day.
She also said, "I believe it is our responsibility to be a symbol of compassion and the embodiment of Christ to them."
In the 2020 book "The Big Hustle," Mark Wahlberg, who currently resides in Florida and runs Wahl St. Productions, recounts his journey from addiction to redemption.
In February, he revealed more about his journey on the Hallow app through his personal "Surrender Story."
Locked up while brothers soared
In the late 1980s, Donnie Wahlberg, Mark Wahlberg's younger brother, rose to fame as a member of the international music sensation "New Kids on the Block."
Mark, another younger brother, later became a solo rap star known as Marky Mark and is now one of the biggest celebrities in entertainment.
The actor who stars in the new Hollywood movie "Arthur the King" is also a partner and spokesperson for Hallow.
While "Wahlberg" was on its way to becoming one of the biggest names in show business, Big Brother Jim was already in prison.
Despite a life spent devoted to crime and not to Christ, redemption found him and loved him.
A crucial juncture occurred when a Boston street vendor was outperformed by a prison priest, Fr. James Freitas.
"I thought she was God. That’s my understanding of who she was at that moment." — Jim Wahlberg about Mother Teresa
Wahlberg stated that the first thing he requested was for the person to bring a cassette tape of his brother, who he informed him was a member of the singing group, the New Kids on the Block.
"I asked him to bring me a cassette tape from the stores and he did. I didn't think he was being generous, but instead wondered what else he would bring me next."
He told Planet Chronicle Digital that he wasn't thinking about reaching the foot of the cross or any of that.
"I contemplated how I would manipulate the situation and consume all the cigarettes and coffee while gaining access to his phone, and, as you know, that was my plan."
‘Need to know more’
When Fr. Freitas invited Wahlberg to clean the prison chapel, he was essentially forced to attend Mass, causing plans to change.
The inmate concurred, hoping that his exemplary conduct would result in an early release from his nine-year imprisonment.
According to Wahlberg, it was at one of those services that Jesus Christ appeared to him in the form of Mother Teresa.
Wahlberg stated, "I ran back to the priest and said, 'I need to know more about the Jesus Mother Teresa is talking about,' after having that experience with her."
He stated, "Growing up, it wasn't what I was accustomed to. I require more information about this Jesus who sacrificed himself for me and who loves me despite my mistakes."
Wahlberg has remained sober since leaving prison nearly 40 years ago.
His business today focuses on spreading the message of Christ, which he received from Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
A spiritual icon was honored in a "soaring tribute" documentary that became one of the most successful of 2022, according to the film's website.
The Eucharistic revival will be explored in "Jesus Thirst: The Miracle of the Eucharist," which will be released in June.
He's also producing "Roadmap to Heaven."
The movie portrays the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis, who passed away from leukemia at the age of 15 in 2006, despite having recorded several miracles.
Acutis was beatified in 2020.
