Charlie Daniels would be pleased as a nonprofit celebrates its 10th anniversary of assisting American veterans.
The Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards will be held on September 11th, recognizing individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving the country.
The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project is marking its 10th anniversary of supporting American heroes.
Charlie Daniels, a renowned country musician with The Charlie Daniels Band, was celebrated for showcasing his fervent patriotism.
In 2014, Daniels established The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project, a nonprofit organization that assists U.S. military veterans and first responders.
The project has now raised approximately $4 million for the cause and established connections with numerous veteran-advocacy groups nationwide, ten years after its inception.
David Corlew, Daniels' longtime manager, stated in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital that he believed the late musician, who passed away in July 2020, would be content with how his team, including his wife Hazel Daniels, has continued to execute the project.
"We offer support for the return, rehabilitation and reintegration back into civilian life for veterans and first responders."
Corlew, who spent 47 years working for Daniels, stated that he believes Daniels would be proud of the mission's continuation and expansion, resulting in more time and individuals willing to assist.
Although Daniels is not physically present, he is spiritually connected to the group, Corlew stated.
"Charlie's vision is the reason we're here, as he is known for his influence, love for the veteran and first responder communities, and patriotism."
The Journey Home Project was founded 10 years ago by Corlew, who is both the president and COO, along with Daniels, with the goal of providing support for veterans and identifying other organizations that perform valuable work.
He informed Planet Chronicle Digital that they provide assistance for veterans and first responders in their readjustment to civilian life, including support for their return, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
Corlew continued the mission after Daniels' death by supporting organizations with shared interests, such as Operation Song, War Horses for Veterans, and Charlie Five.
Corlew, who has devoted a decade to this field, observed that veteran care has evolved into a "generational" issue.
"We have children of veterans who have seen divorces and witnessed a parent committing suicide," he stated. "This is a tragic issue that has reached an alarming level."
The Journey Home Project helped develop the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Families Assistance Program at Middle Tennessee State University, which Corlew recognized.
""We're proud to be a small part of the most comprehensive veteran's assistance center in the country," he said."
The Journey Home team established the annual Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards to recognize individuals or groups who embody the project's mission of supporting and caring for those who have served the country, in addition to raising funds.
The event happening on Sept. 11 at Nashville's City Winery will honor three individuals, including broadcaster Storme Warren, former NYPD commissioner Bernie Kerick, and Tom Higgins, head of general services at Fiserv Incorporated in Milwaukee.
"Supporting our veterans is a nonpartisan issue."
The Vigianos, a three-generation family of first responders from Long Island, New York, will be honored for their service, including those who tragically lost their lives while on duty on 9/11.
The Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards ceremony, which is usually held in October, will take place on 9/11 this year to symbolically honor those who served.
Corlew communicated to other veterans and first responders that there are available organizations that offer assistance and support.
""If you can't donate to Journey Home Project, spread the word and the love," he said."
"We, representing the 60s and 70s, aim to spread love as well."
He stated that there is a great demand in the USA for veterans and first responders.
"I hope our country will continue to work towards supporting our veterans as a nonpartisan issue."
