A humpback whale named Zillion accidentally scooped up a seemingly stunned seal off the coast of Washington state, as shown in a photograph.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, a group of tourists experienced more than they expected during a Blue Kingdom Whale and Wildlife Tours excursion.
The tourists, traveling from Anacortes, Washington, observed Zillion during her feeding time in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and witnessed her almost swallowing a harbor seal that had gotten caught between her sharp teeth.
On Thursday, during our full day tour, a humpback whale accidentally swallowed a harbor seal. Naturalist Brooke captured the moment on camera.
After a massive whale breached the water's surface, a seal was caught up in the action and captured in a photo.
The group noted that fortunately, the seal had some luck on their side, as Zillion quickly noticed the unwelcome dinner guest and released the seal accordingly.
The NOAA states that humpback whales, not seals, are the typical filter-feeders that consume small crustaceans (mainly krill) and small fish.
The "once in a lifetime sight" was praised by individuals on social media for its spectacular photos.
