Bride reconsiders 'no children' rule after wedding-day backlash: 'Be just as rude'
An outpouring of advice from both social media users and etiquette experts has been triggered by the bride's drama.
A woman who was engaged and seeking advice on Reddit after receiving pushback from her wedding guests who opposed her decision to ban children from the big day.
A user on the "r/wedding" subreddit sought advice from other social media users regarding a challenging situation concerning the couple's wedding.
One couple said it was okay for the ceremony but would bring their two kids to the reception without asking if it was okay.
How do I handle this situation since they informed us they would be doing it?
The woman was advised by Reddit users to stand firm and assert her authority.
If you're unable to attend, we understand and look forward to celebrating with you at a later date.
Another user suggested that I should be as rude as the other person and clearly convey to them that the children will not be allowed to attend the wedding or reception.
An etiquette expert from California, Rosalinda Randall, stated via email to Planet Chronicle Digital that the "no-children rule" should be strictly enforced if it is implemented.
The bride was advised by the speaker to determine with her fiancé where to draw the line for guests who make demands or request special treatment.
Randall advised the Reddit user to consider resolving the situation with the invited guests in person, if feasible, after determining whether children are allowed at the wedding.
If you're not enforcing the dress code, you may face hurt feelings, questions, and pithy remarks from guests whose children were not included.
Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore advised the Reddit user to reply, "We appreciate your children, but we've opted for an 'adults-only' policy to maintain consistency for all participants. We sincerely hope you'll still be able to participate!"
Today, child-free weddings are becoming increasingly popular, according to Allison Cullman, a wedding expert at Zola.
While 47% of couples invite kids, 35% request guests to arrange babysitters for the evening, according to Zola data.
She stated that even if a couple is welcoming children to their wedding, many couples often provide stipulations at the event to ensure that the wedding is enjoyable for both kids and adults.
Some couples will designate play areas for children during the event, said Cullman.
Some couples may establish age restrictions for kids attending their wedding, as she stated.
