An etiquette expert states that wedding guests can depart early under one specific condition.
A family wedding on Thursday night is causing a Reddit user to consider leaving early.
A guest at a wedding asked for guidance on social media about whether it was acceptable to depart the celebration early.
The user posted on Reddit seeking advice from other social media users about leaving an upcoming wedding early due to certain reasons.
The wedding ceremony of my cousin is at 4 p.m., followed by a cocktail hour, dinner/reception, and an after-party.
The ceremony and reception will take place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., which is six hours.
The Redditor stated that she was in her mid-40s and would be attending the family wedding without a companion.
The guest mentioned that she was only attending the Thursday night wedding, which is 60 miles out of town, out of respect for her aunt and uncle.
Although I am an introvert and struggle with small talk, my partner, who is unable to attend due to a back injury, is the life of the party, so I may feel a bit lost.
May I politely depart around 8:30 p.m.? Is it possible to leave earlier?
According to Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore, it is acceptable for the Reddit user to leave the wedding reception early, but she should do one thing before she goes.
She advised the guest to thank the bride and groom before leaving.
"Whitmore stated, "This is proper etiquette and demonstrates her appreciation for the invitation.""
Most Reddit users believe it's acceptable to leave the reception before the end, as long as it's not during a significant moment in the day.
After all the special events occur (e.g. cake, first dance, mom/son dance, daughter/father dance, tosses), I typically depart.
I will remain until after dinner because you RSVP'd.
A person on Reddit stated that they recently got married and were unbothered by guests leaving the reception before the cake cutting ceremony.
