An ancient Egyptian temple dedicated to a fertility god was recently unearthed by archaeologists, dating back over 2,000 years.
On Saturday, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery made during an excavation led by a joint Egyptian-German archaeological commission.
The temple is believed to have been founded during the reign of King Ptolemy VIII, who was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and passed away in 116 BC.
In Sohag, archaeologists discovered the Great Temple of Athribis, which is dedicated to the fertility god Min and is being referred to as the Great Temple of Athribis.
The Ptolemaic dynasty, which was made up of Macedonian Greek rulers, governed Egypt for almost 300 years, from 305 BC until 30 BC. The end of this dynasty signaled the conclusion of Hellenistic Egypt, prior to the Roman Empire's rule.
The temple's pylon, or gate, is 167 feet wide, and each tower has a width of 78 feet.
The SCA secretary-general, Dr. Mohammed Ismail Khaled, stated that the original height of the pylon was approximately 59 feet.
Along the exterior facade of the pylon, hieroglyphic texts were discovered. Additionally, excavators unearthed some of the temple's interior walls and engravings of Min and Repyt, a lion goddess who was one of his wives.
The southern chamber, adorned with hieroglyphic texts and depictions of celestial gods, was discovered by archaeologists to measure the hours of the night, according to a press release.
An attic with a staircase consisting of four steps was discovered by a group of archaeologists, which may have been destroyed in the 700s AD. The attic was accessible through a small entrance to the building.
The Egyptian-German mission has been operating in the Atribus region for over a decade, and as a result, the entire Great Temple of Atribus has been fully revealed, according to the Egyptian ministry's statement.
