An Alaska man and police officers saved a baby moose from certain death after it became trapped in a lake.
Another calf was nearby when the young moose's mother struggled with her baby, who was about 4 feet away.
Last week, a baby moose in Alaska was rescued from certain death after it fell into a lake and got stuck between a floatplane and a dock.
On Friday morning at 6:30 a.m., when Spencer Warren, an employee of Destination Alaska Adventure Co., arrived at Beluga Lake in Homer, he initially thought the noise he heard was from a bird, according to the Associated Press.
As he prepared the floatplane for a trip, he noticed the noise coming from a moose calf that was stuck between the floats of the plane and the dock.
Warren revealed that his initial reaction was, "Oh, man, where is Mama? I'm sure she's close by."
The mother, who was with another calf, was about 4 feet away from the trapped calf and was preventing Warren from getting any closer to her struggling baby.
Despite trying repeatedly, the young moose couldn't escape the lake because its hooves couldn't grip the metal floats, which are used in planes to allow them to take off and land on water.
"Warren described Friday's rescue as an ice rink for moose, with its hooves slipping and making it impossible for the animal to stand up."
Warren contacted his boss, who called the Homer Police Department for assistance.
According to Homer police Lt. Ryan Browning, when officers arrived at the dock, one officer used his police cruiser to block off the mama moose while another officer and Warren began pulling the calf from the water.
Despite one of the moose's legs being trapped on top of the float, the rescuers managed to retrieve it safely from the water.
"Warren said, 'Thankfully, he wasn't moving, which made the rescue a bit easier. We simply lifted him straight out and placed him on the dock there.'"
The calf was assisted by an officer in standing up on the boardwalk and was later reunited with its mother.
Rescuing a small creature always makes you feel good, Browning stated to The AP.
