An adorable baby two-toed sloth has arrived at Zoo Atlanta.
At Zoo Atlanta, the latest addition to the animal family remains unnamed.
Earlier this month, a Hoffmann's two-toed sloth was born at Georgia's Zoo Atlanta, and the zoo is now celebrating this exciting event.
An unnamed sloth infant was born on Aug. 9 to its mother Nutella, 7, and father Cocoa, 31, at Zoo Atlanta, as stated in an Aug. 14 press release.
Olivia, a female, is Nutella's first child, born in June 2023, according to the zoo.
Gina Ferrie, vice president of collections and conservation at Zoo Atlanta, stated that she and her team are thrilled about the arrival of Nutella's newborn.
Our members and guests can learn about the fascinating adaptations and behaviors of sloths, she said.
The length of sloth pregnancies, which lasts for about 11 months to a year, is considered unusually long for the animal kingdom, according to the zoo.
The zoo stated that these pregnancies are not easily confirmed, adding to the excitement over the new sloth baby's arrival.
Despite the lengthy duration of sloth pregnancies, sloth infants experience a faster rate of development compared to most other mammal newborns, according to Zoo Atlanta.
Sloth infants are born with fully developed claws for clinging to their mothers, eyes open, and teeth already present.
Ferrie stated that while Hoffmann's two-toed sloths are not currently classified as endangered, they have an emerging conservation story that highlights the impact of human activities on wild animals and ecosystems.
According to Zoo Atlanta, Hoffmann's two-toed sloths, native to Central and South America, are facing mounting threats in the wild due to illegal logging practices and other human activities.
According to Zoo Atlanta, hundreds of sloths are electrocuted annually while trying to use power lines to move between isolated forest areas.
The Sloth Conservation Project, a Costa Rica-based organization, collaborates with Zoo Atlanta to rescue, rehabilitate and release sloths.
Nutella and her newest offspring can be seen at the Summer Sloth Habitat.
