An 80-year-old WWII soldier's remains have been identified and will be reburied at a national cemetery in France.
In 1946, the War Department declared Jeremiah P. Mahoney dead because his body could not be found amidst heavy fighting.
This week, military officials announced that the remains of a World War II soldier who was killed in the mountains of France during a German offensive in 1944 have been identified and will be reburied at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
The Army's Anti-Tank Company, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, was assigned to Mahoney, and his unit resupplied and reinforced the regiment during the fighting.

In May 1945, four months before Germany surrendered to the Allied forces in France, he passed away.
In 1946, the American Graves Registration Command recovered Mahoney's remains, but they were unable to identify him, and he was eventually buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium in 1949.
In August 2022, his remains were analyzed at a DPAA laboratory after being exhumed.
In May of this year, he was identified using DNA, anthropological, and circumstantial evidence, and will eventually be reburied at Arlington National Cemetery.
