An 117-year-old nun who enjoys playing soccer has been identified as the world's oldest person.
Pope Francis honors Sister Inah Canabarro on her 110th birthday.
A Brazilian nun who loves soccer is thought to be the world's oldest living person at nearly 117 years old, and she attributes her long life to her unwavering Catholic faith.
On Saturday, LongeviQuest announced that Sister Inah Canabarro is the world's oldest person, as confirmed by early life records.
After Tomiko Itooka's death in Japan at age 116 on Dec. 26, 2024, the now-wheelchair-bound nun was named the world's oldest living person.
Every Saturday, her nephew visits her and sends voice messages to keep her spirits up after two hospitalizations.
""The other sisters claim she experiences a thrill when she hears my voice," he stated."
According to LongeviQuest researchers, Canabarro was born on June 8, 1908, to a large family in southern Brazil. However, her nephew claims that her birth was registered two weeks late and that she was actually born on May 27, 1908.
She spent two years in Montevideo, Uruguay, working in religious work before moving to Rio de Janeiro and eventually settling in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul.
At her 110th birthday, she was recognized by Pope Francis. She is the second oldest nun on record, following Lucile Randon, who was the world's oldest person until her death in 2023 at the age of 118.
She is committed to her faith and devoted to her local soccer club, Inter, which celebrates her birthday every year as the oldest fan.
Her room is adorned with team colors red and white, as her nephew stated.
"Regardless of your race or socioeconomic status, Inter is the team for everyone," she declared in a video celebrating her 116th birthday with the club's president on social media.
