Is better-for-you fare at White Castle an option?
Experts suggest trading calorie and sodium bombs for lesser offenders at the fast-food chain that specializes in slider sandwiches served on buns.
Registered dietitian Kaytee Hadley, founder of Holistic Health and Wellness in Richmond, Virginia, stated that finding a nutritious meal at White Castle can be difficult due to the menu's variety of sliders and mostly fried sides.
Lara Clevenger, a registered dietitian nutritionist and CEO of Omni Nutrition LLC in Edgewater, Florida, pointed out that when people think of White Castle, they usually associate it with cheesy sliders and milkshakes, which are not the healthiest food choices.
"She mentioned that there are many sliders to choose from, some of which are high in calories while others have fewer calories."
Hadley identified the menu's best nutritional feature as the smaller size of the sliders, which allows customers to control portion sizes while maintaining high-quality ingredients.
If you're bringing your White Castle home, consider adding a salad and/or soup to your meal for a filling experience without overloading on sliders.
White Castle's top picks for healthier options are recommended by Hadley and Clevenger.
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to White Castle for comment.
Impossible Slider or The Original Slider
Instead of ordering sliders loaded with toppings such as crispy onions, cheese, and bacon, Hadley suggested considering a pared-down order of either two vegan Impossible Sliders or two Original Sliders (made with beef).
"By eliminating extra sugar, saturated fat, and empty calories, you can quickly reduce your overall calorie intake," she stated.
You can add vitamins and other nutrients to your sandwich by topping it with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.
Hadley stated that the Mott's applesauce pouches are a great side option with no added sugar and only 90 calories from fruit if you desire more.
Fish Nibblers
In certain regions, this side is made with Alaska pollock.
Clevenger stated that medium-sized fish nibblers offer 30g of protein and 590 calories, making them a suitable alternative to traditional sliders.
Chicken Rings
Craving chicken?
Instead of a sandwich, try this ring-shaped dish that resembles chicken nuggets.
"Another excellent substitute for sliders is the nine-piece Chicken Rings, which contain approximately 470 calories and 26 grams of protein," stated Clevenger.
The 1921 Slider
White Castle was founded in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921.
If you select two 1921 Sliders with American cheese, your order will have 500 calories and 28 grams of protein, as stated by Clevenger.
She stated that beef sliders offer the greatest value for the calories spent.
Original Slider with Egg & Cheese
If you're at White Castle for breakfast, try this sandwich with eggs and cheddar cheese.
Clevenger stated that the two breakfast sliders would contain 560 calories and 28g of protein.
A good rule of thumb is to consume at least 25-35 grams of protein per meal, as she advised.
Crispy Chicken Breast Slider
The best protein-to-calorie option on the menu is two sliders, which provide 40 grams of protein, according to Clevenger.
Instead of having French fries or other sides, opt for sandwiches with steamed string beans or broccoli at home.
Hot or Iced Lemon Tea
A great option, according to Jenna Hunter, a registered dietitian with the social media handle @TheHealthyHopHead.
Adding a little bit of lemon will provide vitamin C and zest.
If you don't like tea, consider other healthy drink options, such as milk, orange juice, apple juice, or water instead of soda or milkshake.
