A unique Ten Commandments stone was discovered by chance and is now worth a staggering amount.
The tablet lacks one of the Ten Commandments, featuring a section specific to the Samaritan community.
An ancient Byzantine tablet featuring the Ten Commandments, which was found in a private home and is now being sold at auction, is a significant piece of history.
According to a press release from Sotheby's, the tablet is predicted to be sold for approximately $1 to $2 million.
The estimated age of the tablet, which weighs 115 pounds and stands at two feet tall, is around 1,500 years old.
"This is truly unique. It's one of the most significant historic artifacts I've ever dealt with," Sharon Liberman Mintz, Sotheby's international senior specialist of Judaica, books and manuscripts, stated to ARTnews. The tablet was first unearthed in 1913 near Israel's southern coast during railway construction. For many years, it was overlooked and utilized as a paving stone in front of a house, with its inscription exposed to regular foot traffic.
Jonathan Cahn, a bestselling author, claims that the Bible provides clear guidance on who will triumph in today's battles.
The stone inscription comprises 20 lines that are closely related to well-known Biblical texts shared by Christians and Jews. Notably, the tablet only includes nine of the Ten Commandments, excluding "Do not take the Lord's name in vain," and instead includes a command to worship on Mount Gerizim, a sacred site for Samaritans.
Richard Austin, Sotheby's Global Head of Books & Manuscripts, stated that the tablet is not only a significant historical artifact but also a tangible link to the beliefs that shaped Western civilization. He added that encountering this shared cultural heritage is like traveling through time and connecting with cultures and faiths through one of humanity's earliest and most enduring moral codes. The tablet will be displayed at Sotheby's in New York from December 5th to 17th and will be auctioned off on December 18th. Sotheby's did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
