A state fishing record for tiger trout is broken by a teen.

A 13-year-old boy from Kemmerer, Wyoming, set a state fishing record by catching a tiger trout from the Viva Naughton Reservoir.

According to a press release from the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD), Jaxon Krall caught a 12.77-pound fish measuring 31.25 inches long and with a girth of 16.75 inches.

The tiger trout caught by Krall using a Thomas Buoyant lure weighed 11.93 pounds, breaking the previous state record on the same reservoir.

According to the release, Krall stated, "I was fishing for anything that would bite, but I knew when I hooked it that it was big."

Tiger trout are a sterile hybrid of the brook trout and brown trout.

Robert Krall, father of Krall, informed Planet Chronicle Digital that his son was thrilled upon catching the fish and even more elated when he discovered he had set the new Wyoming state record for tiger trout.

Jaxon Krall expressed his eagerness to return to the same reservoir to catch another tiger trout, but he intends to release the next one, as stated in the press release.

The Utah chub population in Viva Naughton is significant, and Game and Fish believed stocking tiger trout would reduce the numbers of chub and increase the diversity of the fishery, as stated by WGFD officials.

The tiger trout in Viva Naughton are performing well, according to Robb Keith, Game and Fish fisheries supervisor in the Green River Region.

Keith stated in the release that we keep a limited supply of tiger trout to give anglers a chance to catch a remarkable fish occasionally.

Keith said he expects the reservoir to continue to grow exceptional fish.

Keith stated that they are mostly found near the shore, up to 25 feet deep, and close to structures. They feed on shiners and Utah chubs, so anglers should use lures, flies, and baits that mimic these forage fish.
